About The Position

Under limited supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in maintaining the safety and security of the Courts and court services. This role acts as a Certified Court Security Officer, ensuring the safety of those who participate in the judicial process and providing safe and secure access to justice. Duties may include potentially high-risk situations involving the safety of court personnel and the public.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.
  • Three years of recent experience as a police officer, military police officer or comparable security experience where training, qualifying with and carrying a firearm was required, to include recent experience in a position involving significant interaction with the public.
  • Must successfully complete the Arizona Supreme Court's Court Security Officer Training Academy within 90 days of employment.
  • Must successfully complete the Arizona Supreme Court's Court Security Officer Firearms Training Academy within 180 days of employment pursuant to ARS§12-299.10.
  • Candidates must successfully pass a psychological examination.
  • Must not have any felony conviction(s) within the last 10 years or dishonorable discharge from the military.
  • Must not have any misdemeanor conviction(s) involving domestic violence within the previous five years.
  • Ability to interact with people who are often: confused, angry, and/or openly hostile, while maintaining proper security and decorum.
  • Ability to understand Court procedures and processes.
  • Ability to interpret City policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Ability to qualify with firearms and less lethal weapons, as assigned, on an annual basis.
  • Ability to learn and interpret City policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Ability to identify hazardous or unsafe conditions or behaviors.
  • Ability to listen, communicate, and work effectively with a diverse group of people.
  • Proficiently perform computerized word processing, reading comprehension, summarizing, and writing/editing.
  • Ability to attend or conduct various meetings as needed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, court staff, and the general public.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to attend a 40-hour Court Security Officer training course and be certified in accordance with standards set by the Arizona Administrative Office of the Courts.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct screening of persons, baggage, or containers to ensure compliance with Court Security regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Operate basic security equipment such as x-ray machines and hand wands at the court entrances.
  • Patrol court facilities and grounds.
  • Provide an armed security presence at the main court entrance conducting an overwatch of entry screening procedures.
  • Monitor security systems, including closed circuit video, fire and security alarms; and access control hardware.
  • Escort vendors when on premises.
  • Answer routine inquiries and direct visitors to appropriate areas.
  • Screen mail, including incoming and outgoing packages for suspicious contents.
  • Provide close judicial officer protection to include liaison with police regarding communicated threats via correspondence or in person.
  • Provide Courtroom security including security sweeps, jury protection and high-risk trial support.
  • Collect and process fingerprints for criminal justice purposes, court employment, and for adoption applicants.
  • Ensure the integrity of juries are maintained.
  • Handle court documentation, evidence, and exhibits.
  • Provide Critical Incident response, to include but not limited to an active shooter interdiction.
  • Prepare incident reports and daily log entries.
  • Prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas.
  • Enforce correction of infractions through verbal warning, expel unruly persons, and detain more serious offenders for proper authorities.
  • Attend Order of Protection and Injunction Against Harassment hearings.
  • Respond to assistance calls from courtrooms.
  • Qualify with firearms on an annual basis, and other defensive tactics and/or less lethal weapons as appropriate to the job assignment.
  • Work safely and support a culture of workplace safety.
  • Effectively follow directives.
