About The Position

Transports specimens, reports, and supplies between hospitals, offsite satellite hospital operations, as well as non-affiliated hospitals and physician offices. Operates hospital-owned vehicles safely, adhering to all traffic regulations. Performs vehicle inspections, maintenance, and ensures cleanliness. Communicates with dispatchers and laboratory staff to ensure quality patient care and timely delivery/pickup of items. Transports employees and supplies between various NorthShore sites. Maintains accurate driving records and ensures passenger compliance with ID requirements. Represents NorthShore and the department by providing routine explanations of services and following NorthShore Service Values.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or four (4) years of equivalent work experience.
  • Willingness to learn, dependability, reliability, emotional stability, attention to detail, and ability to perform functions outlined in physical requirements.
  • Seeks assistance of supervisory personnel as necessary.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Possesses honesty, integrity, and trustworthy qualities.

  • Ability to organize and maintain driving records.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to change.
  • Six (6) months to one (1) year of route delivering or courier driving experience.
  • Valid Illinois Class "D" driver’s license.
  • Held a valid driver's license for three (3) years prior to the date of application.
  • Good driving record subject to State driver motor vehicle verification.
  • Within three (3) years of date of application or promotion, must not have been convicted of: a) driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, b) reckless driving, c) leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury, d) drag racing, e) manslaughter, f) reckless homicide, g) reckless conduct from use of a motor vehicle or other serious driving infraction conviction.
  • Lifting/pushing/pulling 20 to 100 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

  • Transports specimens, reports, and supplies between hospitals, offsite satellite hospital operations, non-affiliated hospitals, and physician offices.
  • Operates hospital-owned vehicles in a safe manner, adhering to all state, local, and federal traffic regulations.
  • Performs pre and post-trip inspection of vehicles for potential hazards.
  • Maintains vehicle cleanliness (refueling, washing).
  • Notifies management immediately of any mechanical or physical problems with any vehicle.
  • Services all routine and auxiliary sites as scheduled, retrieving all items and obtaining signatures.
  • Utilizes Soft Express handheld device to scan specimens and packages, and to document issues or concerns.
  • Regularly communicates with dispatcher to confirm receipt and completion of assignments, issues, and concerns.
  • Enters pertinent data into handheld device related to pick-up and delivery.
  • Communicates with Laboratory staff and customers to ensure quality patient care.
  • Transports employees and supplies between hospitals, corporate offices, and other NorthShore sites, including satellite operations, special events, and U.S. Government locations.
  • Retrieves mail and supplies from scheduled locations (e.g., Mail/Copy Center, Receiving, Pharmacy, Operating Rooms, SPD).
  • Performs quality sort pre/post-delivery to ensure accuracy.
  • Notifies department manager of any and all driving infractions, including loss of driver's license, immediately.
  • Maintains accurate driving records, logs, and trip tickets, rerunning them daily to the department and providing explanations.
  • Ensures all NorthShore passengers require an ID to board transportation.
  • Provides courier service to assigned routes for delivery and pick-up of supplies/specimens for NorthShore facilities and outside vendor companies.
  • Safely transports passengers and supplies between assigned locations.
  • Performs duties in a cost-effective manner and communicates any wasteful practices to supervisors.
  • Assists with special assignments and projects.
  • Represents NorthShore and the department, providing routine explanations of services to users.
  • Follows NorthShore Service Values, demonstrating friendly and courteous behavior.
  • Deals effectively with the demands of departmental relationships with hospitals, clinics, and departments.
