About The Position

The Lab Courier's primary responsibility is assisting in the transportation of clinical and anatomical specimens for laboratory testing which includes specific clerical functions. This role involves driving up to 650 miles per shift in various weather conditions, maintaining vehicle cleanliness, and ensuring specimen integrity. The courier will also be responsible for logging all stops and deliveries, communicating effectively with team members and customers, and keeping up-to-date with operational changes.

  • Driver's License - Illinois Secretary of State (ILSOS)
  • Clean MVR

Responsibilities

  • Maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Ensure proper use, care, and cleanliness of the assigned vehicle.
  • Follow all established routes, protocols, Rules of the Road, and laws.
  • Safely drive up to 650 miles per shift in both urban and rural settings across all weather conditions.
  • Park only in designated areas at the end of your shift.
  • Clean the vehicle out completely every day, removing all coolers, supplies, envelopes, and trash.
  • Park the vehicle with no less than a half tank of fuel.
  • Immediately relay any operation concerns or maintenance needs to your Manager or Supervisor.
  • Transport clinical and anatomical specimens, supplies, and mail.
  • Perform designated routes efficiently, maintaining scheduled stops within allotted time periods.
  • Adjust routes dynamically to meet client needs.
  • Cooperate with co-workers to ensure smooth route transitions between couriers.
  • Place utmost importance on customer service on all routes.
  • Verify specimens are properly labeled prior to transport to the laboratory, using good judgment when accepting items.
  • Log all stops, specimens picked up, and deliveries using the handheld tracking device. During system downtime, paper logs must be consistently used.
  • Transport lab and hospital-related items accurately and promptly.
  • Prepare and deliver supplies requested by clients immediately via the Customer Service Department—do not hold supplies in the car to deliver on the next routine route.
  • Effectively communicate information and share knowledge with peers, lead staff, coordinators, and internal/external customers in a timely manner.
  • Complete all assigned work within designated route times.
  • Keep abreast of operational changes by reading email messages daily.
