About The Position

The Part-Time School Counselor supports the academic, social-emotional, and behavioral development of students within a faith-based environment. The counselor works collaboratively with students, teachers, parents, and administration to promote student well-being and foster a safe, supportive, and nurturing school community grounded in Catholic values. This role includes providing short-term counseling, guidance, and proactive support while encouraging students to grow in virtue, compassion, and respect for others.

Requirements

  • Active, practicing Roman Catholic
  • Respects and understands a Catholic school philosophy
  • Experience as a school counselor and working with students in grades TK–8th.
  • Proficiency in Spanish.
  • Licensed counselor
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Spend the majority of the day standing in the classroom.
  • Sit on an occasional basis when developing lesson plans, grading, etc.
  • Walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver in tight spaces between desks. Walk on both even and uneven surfaces
  • Deal with students while kneeling or squatting, stooping, or bending
  • Reach at, below, or above shoulder height with the dominant upper extremity; may require trunk or neck rotation to look back at the class
  • Assist in moving children's desks and chairs to change the layout of the classroom to influence the learning situation.
  • Occasionally necessary to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 25 pounds from the office to classrooms
  • Regularly required to be inside the classroom.
  • Required to be mobile to, from, and within the classroom and preschool environment, as well as maneuver throughout the school facility to attend meetings, trainings, and other work-related events.
  • May be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend trainings or workshops.

Responsibilities

  • Provide short-term individual and small group counseling to support students’ social-emotional and behavioral needs
  • Support students in developing skills such as self-regulation, conflict resolution, and positive decision-making, rooted in Christian values
  • Integrate Catholic teachings and virtues (e.g., kindness, empathy, forgiveness, respect) into counseling practices when appropriate
  • Collaborate with teachers and administration to address student concerns and implement effective support strategies
  • Respond to and assist with behavioral or emotional concerns in a timely and compassionate manner
  • Communicate with parents regarding student needs, concerns, and progress (as appropriate)
  • Develop and implement preventative programs (e.g., social-emotional learning, anti-bullying, wellness) that reflect the mission of the Catholic school
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with school policies
  • Provide guidance and resources to teachers and staff to support student well-being and classroom success
  • Participate in student support meetings (e.g., SST meetings) and collaborate as part of a team
  • Support and uphold the mission and philosophy of Catholic education, contributing to a faith-filled school environment
