About The Position

The per diem counselor primarily provides direct psychological/mental health care to students. Occasionally the per diem counselor coordinates training and educational services for students, offers consultations and training to staff and faculty and is involved with health, wellness, and preventive initiatives on campus during the academic year. As a part of the Student Experience Department and a member of the Wellness Team, this position plays a vital role in the enhancement of students’ educational experience in the areas of health and wellness. This is a per diem position that is administratively and clinically responsible through the Lead Counselor. This is an academic year position, approximately 20 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Current, in-depth knowledge of his/her/their field and its standards of practice.
  • Commitment to the practice of quality mental health services, including a commitment to promoting respect and appreciation for diverse populations along with human value in that practice.
  • Awareness of the human developmental processes which occur during college years (undergraduate and graduate).
  • Ability to work with other professional staff and support staff to produce integrated professional services.
  • Ability to use peer supervision appropriately and modify treatment interventions and interpersonal strategies based on feedback from peers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational skills and an ability to provide outreach and training to groups of people.
  • Ability to work independently when necessary, including crisis response, and self-direct in order to develop and administer programming.
  • Minimum of Master’s Degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, or Social Work or related field (e.g. LCSW, LCPC, LMFT, Psychologist) with current full (not conditional) Maine licensure or ability to obtain full Maine licensure before start.
  • Licensable in Maine
  • Minimum two years counseling experience

Nice To Haves

  • Special interest in a University setting; prior experience is preferred.
  • Experience in a college or university counseling center setting preferred.
  • Familiarity with adolescent and adult mental health care preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the needs of eligible clients as they present and determine the best course of care for that individual, symptoms profile and general diagnostic focus.
  • Provide evaluations for students who are referred to the center for alcohol or drug abuse.
  • Complete safety and risk assessments for students in crisis or students referred for unsafe behaviors.
  • Refer clients who exceed the scope of service of campus counseling and wellness services to appropriate disposition in the community.
  • Coordinate with medical staff and monitoring of patients receiving services from both Health and Counseling Services with consent of client.
  • Provide brief counseling of eligible clients, in either group or individual treatment, to facilitate understanding of personal or interactive issues, to define goals and to develop realistic action plans.
  • Demonstrate competence in the use of HU’s digital systems and technology, in general, including but not limited to: University Student Information System (SIS), departmental web, social media sites and counseling electronic record keeping systems to maintain records and releases for patients.
  • Provide administration/staff/faculty with consultation and periodic workshops/trainings regarding mental and emotional health of students.
  • Participate in Center provided individual and group clinical and administrative supervision as scheduled and indicated.
  • Assist with the supervision of graduate interns and practicum students, as needed.
  • Consult with other professionals to discuss counseling practices and resources specific to the post-secondary population.
  • Provide crisis support and intervention to the Husson community, as needed.
  • Complete required CEU/contact hours, clinical supervision, adher to professional code of ethics, timely license renewal, resulting in maintaining complaint-free State of Maine licensure.
  • Identify multiple specific topics on wellness and facilitate Outreach activities and events based on these topics for students throughout the campus during the academic year; collaboration with Wellness Center staff on activities, as needed.
  • Participate in Student Experience Department facilitated events, as needed and including an occasional evening or weekend.
