About The Position

The Counselor II works as a member of the treatment team, coordinating program services, and maintaining the well-being of clients and the integrity of the program. This role requires a thorough understanding of drug and alcohol dependency, mental health, family systems, and 12-Step/recovery resources. The position involves developing and maintaining individualized client records, facilitating process and educational groups, and communicating effectively with clients, staff, and external agencies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • Required current certification number issued from a statewide or nationwide credentialing body (i.e. CCAPP) received upon completion of passing the California Certification exam.
  • Two years supervised experience working in substance abuse and/or a related field.
  • Valid California driver’s license and liability insurance if driving personal vehicle on BHS business.
  • Vision, hearing, manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination adequate for performance of job duties.
  • Able to sit at desk, use keyboard, write and physically perform other job duties.
  • Able to move about the facility to observe clients and staff.
  • Maintain computer skills adequate to perform Caminar/word processing duties within 90 days of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual abilities may be required within certain BHS programs.
  • Certification as domestic violence counselor required in lieu of chemical dependency counselor certification.
  • Certification as domestic violence counselor required in addition to chemical dependency counselor certification.
  • Class “B” California Driver’s License.
  • Class “C” California Driver’s License.
  • Personal vehicle with liability insurance for reimbursable mileage, generally short distances.
  • First Aid certification, obtain within 90 days of employment and maintain current thereafter.
  • CPR certification, obtain within 90 days of employment and maintain current thereafter.
  • Medication training required within 30 days of employment.
  • Obtain NPI Number.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate program services and maintain client well-being and program integrity.
  • Develop and maintain individualized records of client progress and participation in treatment, including admission and discharge, individual, group, family, vocational, and literacy training.
  • Write clear statements summarizing client's feelings, expressions, resistance, and response to their treatment plan, goals, and objectives.
  • Write letters to referral agencies, courts/probation.
  • Confront behavioral changes, identify crises, and recognize when additional assistance is necessary.
  • Recognize personal issues that have an impact on job performance and interactions with clients.
  • Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior.
  • Convey respect for cultural and lifestyle diversities of clients and staff.
  • Prepare for and facilitate process and educational groups.
  • Manage referrals, both in and out of the BHS treatment system.
  • Communicate clearly with clients, staff, peers, supervisors, and non-BHS resources.
  • Admit, orient, and discharge clients (Counselor II specific).
  • Conduct assessments (Counselor II specific).
  • Formulate treatment plans (Counselor II specific).
  • Intervene in crisis situations (Counselor II specific).
  • Adhere to professional boundaries (Counselor II specific).
  • Maintain client records (Counselor II specific).
