About The Position

As an essential part of the school administrative team, the counselor’s role is to guide students in the development of life competencies and to support their emotional wellbeing. The counselor will work with teachers and our IB Coordinators to chart key life competencies across the curriculum and to lead our continuing pilot of Second Step curriculum to strengthen the teaching of SEL and to build our campus capacity for SEL. The role involves completing intake and assessment interviews with students, gathering history, identifying presenting problems, and initiating collaboration with school academic counselors, teachers, and administration to create treatment plans. The counselor will provide ongoing progress updates, individual and/or family therapy services (under supervision), crisis management, and organize social and educational group lectures and workshops. Additionally, the counselor will research, refer, and link clients and students to community resources for various physical and psychological needs.

Requirements

  • Masters Degree or equivalent, in counseling, psychology or related field.
  • 2-4 years direct experience in counseling elementary and/or middle school aged children.
  • Knowledge of culture specific issues related to mental health.
  • Treats everyone with care and respect.
  • Provides care that is culturally informed, developmentally appropriate, non-biased and responsive to local community needs.
  • Utilizes research and empirically-based clinical approaches.
  • Maintains high ethical standards regarding employee conduct and information sharing, as dictated by law, school policies and procedures, and professional discipline.
  • Maintains high standards regarding paperwork and recordkeeping.
  • Access to a personal vehicle and local driving in and around Orange County is required.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. (ISP U.S. participates in E-Verify).

Nice To Haves

  • Licensed Marriage Family Therapist or Licensed Professional Counselor
  • Training and/or experience in child and adolescent development and adult learning.
  • If registered with the state of California as a counseling intern, or in current graduate program.

Responsibilities

  • Provide crisis management in person to de-escalate and contain psychological emergencies.
  • Contact and liaison with emergency services in the community as needed.
  • Organize and facilitate social and educational group lectures and workshops for students.
  • Research, refer, and link clients and students to community resources for various physical and psychological needs.
