About The Position

This is a full-time, categorically funded position at Fresno City College. The role involves providing counseling and support to students, with a particular focus on those from diverse backgrounds and traditionally disadvantaged groups. The position requires a commitment to equity-minded practices and effective engagement with all students.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development.
• Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
• Nine semester units of college coursework predominantly related to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; OR Six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling fieldwork courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages.
• Two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages.
• Ability to work with computers and other technologies utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students.
• Proficiency in utilizing available computer applications and technology related to program coordination, counseling, and instruction.

Nice To Haves

• Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
• Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.
• Related work and professional experience.
• Experience working in EOPS.
• Experience working with students from traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds, students with disabilities, veterans, and/or single parents.
• Commitment to participatory governance, consensus building, and a team approach to serving students.
• Successful counseling experience in a community college.
• Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Responsibilities

• Incorporate elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.
• Work with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including students with disabilities.
• Communicate effectively with students and staff.
• Coordinate community college based grant funded programs and/or categorical programs.
• Report to an outside governing agency.
• Conduct and develop educational workshops.
• Prioritize workload and conflicting demands.
• Counsel persons of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.
• Serve students in a community college setting.
