The counselor may provide care to persons with substance use disorders in the outpatient and inpatient settings. Responsibilities include clinical excellence and patient care, providing evaluation, counseling, and therapeutic services to chemically dependent patients/families. This involves assessing social, psychological, emotional, financial, and cultural problems, as well as chemical abuse history. The role includes making treatment recommendations, acting as a liaison and patient/family advocate, and maintaining open communication with referral sources, families, and others involved in patient treatment regarding progress, discharge, and aftercare plans. The counselor supports patients and families throughout treatment, assists in working towards positive outcomes, and coordinates care with the interdisciplinary treatment team. Developing individual treatment plans, facilitating programming for court-ordered referrals, and assisting patients and families with adjustment to illness, motivation for treatment, and realistic post-treatment planning are key aspects. The role also involves coordinating the completion of Aftercare Plans, recommending post-treatment referrals, and documenting per department guidelines. Maintaining current knowledge of behavioral managed care and precertification/utilization review activities, participating in covering weekend inpatient evaluations on a rotating basis, and providing statistical data or special reports as required are also part of the responsibilities. Additionally, the role involves development and patient education, continuing professional development, participating in community education, assessing and choosing appropriate teaching strategies and therapy modalities based on age-specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn, and comprehension level. Consulting appropriate resources within the Behavioral Health Division for specialized education, demonstrating knowledge of patient and workplace safety, providing educational in-services, participating in conjoint conferences, and developing/promoting relationships with self-help programs are also expected. The counselor will also participate in mandatory education and department staff meetings, and perform other duties as assigned. This includes providing assessments with diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations, supporting patients seeking abstinence, teaching about addiction disease, its signs and symptoms, helping patients identify community resources for abstinence, and educating family members about addiction disease and their role in the recovery process.
