About The Position

Gila Community College is seeking a student-centered counselor to provide comprehensive academic, career, and personal counseling services that support student success, retention, and completion. The counselor works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and community partners to promote equitable access, student engagement, and educational achievement in a diverse, open-enrollment environment.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Counseling or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in academic advising, including transfer advising and degree planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide therapeutic, solution-focused counseling that supports student success, retention, and well-being.
  • Knowledge of academic and career counseling practices, including transfer pathways and student development principles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage diverse students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state regulations impacting higher education, including FERPA and student services compliance.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, access, and inclusion through culturally responsive counseling practices.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, student-centered, and compliance-driven environment.
  • Ability to pass a background screening and obtain or maintain a Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience providing counseling in a post-secondary setting, preferably at a community college or open-enrollment institution.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities, including knowledge of accommodation services and ADA/Section 504 compliance.
  • Instructional experience (e.g., student success courses, workshops, or orientations).
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the community college mission and diverse student populations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and experience supporting student success or retention initiatives.
  • Current or eligibility for state counseling licensure, as appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive academic, career, and personal counseling using solution-focused approaches to support student success, persistence, and completion.
  • Advise students on educational planning, including course selection, degree requirements, transfer pathways, and career goals.
  • Deliver transfer advising, including guidance on articulation agreements, university requirements, and transfer readiness.
  • Interpret placement results, transcripts, and policies to support informed student decision-making.
  • Provide crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and referrals to campus and community resources.
  • Develop and deliver workshops, orientations, and/or courses that promote student success, retention, and career exploration.
  • Support and participate in student success initiatives aimed at improving retention, completion, and equitable outcomes.
  • Assist students with disabilities by facilitating accommodations and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Use data and assessment tools to monitor student progress and inform program improvement.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential student records in compliance with FERPA and institutional policies.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and community partners to support student needs and strengthen services.
  • Engage in outreach to schools, community organizations, and prospective students to promote access and enrollment.
  • Participate in committees, professional development, and initiatives that support the mission of the college.
  • Foster an inclusive, culturally responsive environment that advances equity, access, and student success.
  • Perform general physical activities that require frequent use of hands, arms, and fingers to operate office equipment, computers, and materials.
  • Engage in some whole‑body movement, including walking, standing, balancing, stooping, lifting, carrying, and handling materials as required.
  • Provide professional, effective assistance to students, faculty, staff, and community members in a variety of business and educational settings, applying critical thinking, organization, and strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Perform duties and responsibilities outlined in Procedure 5012.02 – Employee Classification General Responsibilities.
  • Perform additional position‑specific essential functions as assigned.
