Costing Manager

OSI GroupAurora, IL
$111,652 - $167,478Hybrid

About The Position

The Costing Manager is a key leadership role within Operations Finance, responsible for owning and governing the end-to-end finance bill of material and product costing process for OSI North America. This individual will establish and enforce the standards, policies, and procedures that ensure BOM accuracy, product costing integrity, and process consistency across all North America facilities. A critical nuance of this role is that OSI maintains two parallel sets of bills of material. The first is owned by R&D and Operations and is managed through SAP Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), reflecting the product specification and formulation view. The second is the finance BOM, owned by Finance and Operations Accounting, which drives standard costing. The Costing Manager must develop a deep understanding of both BOM sets, how they relate to each other, and where differences exist. This individual is responsible for ensuring that changes in the R&D/Operations BOM are appropriately reflected in the finance BOM, and that both remain accurate and aligned. This requires careful coordination, strong attention to detail, and the judgment to know when a change in one BOM necessitates an update in the other. The Costing Manager must bring strong critical thinking skills to evaluate costing assumptions, challenge inconsistencies, and independently assess whether a BOM accurately reflects the manufacturing reality at each facility. The role requires the judgment to ask the right questions, identify gaps that others may overlook, and make informed recommendations.

Requirements

  • 5–8 years of progressive experience in cost accounting, operations finance, or a related field required.
  • Deep understanding of product costing, bill of materials, routing structures, and manufacturing cost flows.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking ability – must be able to independently evaluate assumptions, identify issues, and make sound recommendations rather than simply executing tasks.
  • Proven track record of managing cross-functional processes and influencing stakeholders across multiple functions and organizational levels.
  • Experience building and maintaining strong working relationships with plant-level finance and operations leaders (Controllers, Plant Managers).
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and enforce process standards, identify gaps, and drive continuous improvement in a multi-plant environment.
  • Extensive experience with BOM creation, maintenance, and costing processes in a manufacturing environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of ERP systems required. SAP experience is strongly preferred, including familiarity with SAP Product Lifecycle Management (PLM).
  • Excellent proficiency in all Microsoft Office Suite products.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Detail-oriented and well-organized with a strong ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and lead initiatives in a complex, multi-facility environment with an emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.

Nice To Haves

  • 5-10 years of experience in related field is preferred.
  • Experience working with dual or parallel BOM structures (e.g., engineering/R&D BOM vs. finance/costing BOM) is strongly preferred.
  • Food processing/manufacturing experience is a plus.
  • BA/BS or equivalent is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • CPA, CMA, or MBA is a plus

  • Apply critical thinking and independent judgment to evaluate costing assumptions, challenge inconsistencies, and ensure BOMs accurately reflect the manufacturing process at each facility.
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce process flow maps for each production process at each OSI North America facility, correlating to cost centers and resources as the foundation for accurate product costing.
  • Build and oversee costing models for new products down to the component level for inventory items including raw materials, gases, oils, and packaging.
  • Lead the collection, validation, and critical assessment of process assumptions regarding yields, waste factors, throughputs, labor, and overhead to ensure new products are costed appropriately.
  • Manage the end-to-end new product costing setup process in SAP, driving cross-functional coordination across R&D, FSQA, the Process Team, Plant Managers, Plant Supply Chain, and Plant Controllers. Hold stakeholders accountable to timelines and deliverables.
  • Build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with Plant Controllers and Plant Managers across all North America facilities to ensure alignment on costing methodologies and BOM accuracy.
  • Partner with FSQA on product specifications, ingredient requirements, and regulatory considerations that impact BOM structure and costing.
  • Serve as the central point of accountability between OSI Corporate and OSI facilities for all finance BOM and costing activities, establishing due dates, tracking progress, escalating issues, and ensuring consistent and accurate information.
  • Lead cross-functional partnerships with Accounting/Finance, Sales, Pricing, Corporate IT, R&D, FSQA, Data Governance, and the Process Team to streamline and continuously improve the BOM creation and costing process.
  • Establish and maintain BOM governance policies and procedures in accordance with OSI company standards; proactively identify gaps and implement process improvements.
  • Participate in and lead portions of new product meetings and management meetings, providing subject matter expertise on costing, BOM structure, and production process implications.
  • Evaluate and recommend changes to methods, systems, and procedures to improve operating efficiency, data quality, and consistency in the BOM and costing process.
