The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., owns and self-manages its nearly 900,000 square foot campus (called Base Camp). Base Camp comprises 5 buildings with structures from 1904 to present day, including three buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a significant renovation project on its campus (called Base Camp). In 2026, we are opening the Museum of Exploration, featuring a state-of-the-art pavilion entrance, auditorium, iconic photo gallery, exhibition space, immersive walk-through attraction, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, and exciting new event space. The capstone of the renovation is a one-of-a-kind nighttime experience in the courtyard. Future phases of the project will include an immersive walk-through attraction, additional meeting and dining space, and sleeping rooms. In addition, Base Camp has significant ongoing capital renewal projects to identify, recommend, and execute. The Cost Manager, Facilities & Capital Planning reports to the Vice President, Facilities & Capital Planning And assists in managing the design, construction, and experiential fit out costs of all ongoing and future campus projects. This position coordinates with existing project management resources, third party consultants and NGS internal staff. This role is responsible for providing finance support for campus projects including budget analysis, monthly project cost reporting and analysis, month-end close requirements, cash flow tracking/forecasting, and other project work within tight deadlines.
