Corrosion Technician

Energy Transfer•Watford City, ND

About The Position

The Corrosion Technician applies corrosion knowledge and skills to repair, install, troubleshoot, analyze, and perform predictive and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment, facilities, systems, and associated devices at gas and liquid facilities and pipelines. Under general direction, the technician designs, installs, operates, inspects, and maintains cathodic protection systems across an assigned pipeline segment, compressor stations, or plant facilities, in compliance with company procedures and regulatory requirements. The role also investigates corrosive conditions, oversees corrosion control and related compliance, evaluates coatings and pipe anomalies, and supports internal corrosion mitigation through testing, sampling, analysis, and treatment-related calculations. The position requires field work in industrial and construction environments, including exposure to adverse weather, hazardous products and materials, loud machinery, and potentially confined spaces. The technician must use appropriate personal protective equipment, follow safety procedures, and may be called out after hours, at night, or on weekends and holidays. Occasional overnight travel may be required. The role may also involve training other technicians and evaluating their qualifications, depending on position level.

Responsibilities

  • Design, install, operate, inspect, and maintain cathodic protection systems for assigned pipeline segments, compressor stations, or plant facilities in compliance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain knowledge of regulatory requirements, perform associated tasks, and complete required documentation, including OSHA, DOT, and EPA records.
  • Investigate and analyze corrosive conditions for existing and proposed facilities.
  • Manage corrosion control and associated compliance for cathodically protected pipelines, compressor stations, plant facilities, and other buried, submerged, or above-ground facilities.
  • Conduct and document pipe-to-soil potential surveys, casing-to-soil readings, rectifier and bond readings, pipeline current-flow measurements, foreign pipe-to-soil readings, and other required cathodic protection surveys.
  • Evaluate protective coating conditions, make repairs as needed, evaluate pipe anomalies, and perform remaining-strength calculations according to established procedures.
  • Apply knowledge of pipeline internal corrosion mechanisms and mitigation measures; conduct treatment and testing, collect samples, test and analyze bacteria, pH, dissolved H2S, and CO2, and calculate chemical requirements.
  • Perform cathodic protection design, including current-requirement calculations and soil-resistivity testing.
  • Generate and maintain reports covering rectifiers, bonds, pipeline isolation, and annual corrosion control.
  • Install, maintain, and repair rectifiers, anode systems, cables, bonds, and test stations; perform ground-bed efficiency calculations.
  • Evaluate stray-current effects from sources such as traction systems, coal mines, and AC transmission lines, and take action to mitigate their effects on company facilities.
