Corrections Utility Plant Operator - SCI Somerset
About The Position
The Corrections Utility Plant Operator at the Department of Corrections, SCI-Somerset supports the safe and efficient operation of utility systems throughout the facility. The role involves hands-on operation and monitoring of technical equipment, oversight of important processes, maintenance and repairs, water testing, recordkeeping, and directing inmate work crews. The position is full-time, with a 40-hour work week. Work hours are determined upon hire, and telework is not available. New Commonwealth of Pennsylvania employees start at an annual salary of $49,010 before taxes; a higher salary may be established under the applicable collective bargaining agreement. The position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55. Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, is required. Candidates must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
Requirements
- Three years of experience operating, maintaining, and repairing a steam or hot water generating plant, or a steam and electric generating plant; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania.
- Ability to perform the essential job functions.
- Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor boilers, generators, water systems, and other utility equipment under normal and emergency conditions.
- Perform routine and non-routine maintenance and repairs, and keep accurate equipment performance records.
- Test boiler water chemistry, maintain logs, and track supplies for water treatment and testing.
- Direct inmate workers, maintain safety, enforce procedures, and monitor movement and work areas.
- Record daily readings, complete required paperwork, and report concerns to supervisors.
