About The Position

The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking a dynamic, energetic, and detailed-oriented Corrections Staff Development Specialist II (SDS). This role involves participating in the development and presentation of orientation and in-service training programs for Department of Corrections employees, covering all applicable Training Academy curriculums. The Specialist will also conduct research, evaluate current training programs, and assist subject matter experts by coordinating training programs. A strong background in training, public speaking, and research is desired.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of (4) four years of college.
  • Requires three (3) years of experience as a law enforcement or correctional trainer.
  • Requires completion of an approved correctional academy.
  • Requires four (4) years of experience working in a State of Illinois Correctional Center or Juvenile Justice Center.
  • Requires completion of the IDOC Instructional Methods training or substantially similar training or one (1) year of training/teaching experience.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.

  • Prefers at least three (3) years of experience in creating PowerPoints, Lesson Plans, and Class Manuals.
  • Prefers working knowledge of public labor relations policies and practices.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in a facility specialized committee or team.

Responsibilities

  • Provides orientation, employee development, and specialized training to Department of Corrections Training Academy cadets, class counselors, and other departmental staff.
  • Prepares written, audio, and visual presentation materials for instruction programs.
  • Acts as a liaison regarding instruction programs, scheduling, requirements, descriptive course content, and related information.
  • Manages cadet program records and graduation activities.
  • Assists the supervisor in fiscal responsibility by informing the supervisor of training material and equipment needs.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
