About The Position

The Corrections Sergeant coordinates shift activities and delegates work assignments, including prisoner transports, filling last minute shift vacancies or other specified tasks. The Corrections Sergeant is a working Corrections Officer and is required to personally interact and manage inmates, maintain an orderly and secure jail and ensure compliance by inmates with established rules and regulations. This position is directly supervised by the Jail Administrator and Assistant Jail Administrator. One must rely on independent judgment, training and policy/procedure to perform all duties necessary for the day-to-day functions and in emergency situations.

Requirements

Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or three years or more of recent experience as a corrections officer; or a combination of education, experience as a corrections officers &/or experience in leadership roles
Must pass Sergeant’s Promotion Exam.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and policy manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before people, on the phone or radio, and over intercoms.
Ability to calculate figures such as area, circumference and volume.
Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Working knowledge of multiple computer environments.
A high level of computer competency with standard data retrieval, record management and word processing software.
Computer and typing experience are required.
Knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office, Internet, LETG system (in-house records system); Adobe Pro and Touchscreen systems for jail security.
Digital cameras and recorders are used.
Comprehensive knowledge of principles, techniques and practices of the approved Department of Corrections Standards for a jail facility.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization and supervision exists.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Ability to de-escalate stressful situations.
Must meet current regulatory requirements for the position.
CJIS certification from MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
Certification and re-certification in CPR/First Aid.
Certification and re-certification in training as required by Statue, Department of Corrections Standards and the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
Medication Delivery training.
Use of Force and Taser training.
Driver’s License required.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision.

Responsibilities

Oversees and monitors jail operations when administration is not available.
Reviews policy and procedures, assures correctional staff standardization and recommends changes to administration.
Assists assistant jail administrator in standardizing training curriculum for corrections officers.
Makes recommendations to administration regarding assuring a safe working environment for jail staff.
Assists in conducting inspections of the jail facility to ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance and advise administration of repairs needed.
Consults with corrections officers and jail staff and works with the assistant jail administrator for the purpose of resolving problems and improving the effectiveness of jail operation.
Consults with assistant jail administrator on the evaluation of performance of corrections staff.
Works with the team of sergeants and jail administration to build a work schedule and cover time off.
Recommends equipment and supply needs to administration.
Set up recording in pre-booking area for new arrests and assists arresting officers with pre-booking process in LETG program.
Perform booking process for incoming inmates.
Knowledge of differing booking processes on new arrests, warrant arrests, sentenced and boarder inmates.
Read and understand a judicial order for a jail sentence for those reporting to serve local jail time.
Read and understand the components of a release order to ensure all pieces are properly in place prior to releasing an inmate.
Understand paperwork for federally boarded inmates and answer questions on inmate’s kite, grievance and appeals process.
Understand the basic working of prison systems and work with inmates coming from DOC and BOP facilities.
Execute proper levels of inmate searches for safety and security of jail.
Operate fingerprint machine for criminal and civil prints that are acceptable for BCA and FBI standards.
Notify court, prosecuting attorneys and probation of new arrest. Send Hit Confirmations to other agencies via PsPortals notifying them of an inmate in our facility with a warrant.
Understanding of the 36/48-hour rule for arrests and when to notify county attorney of arrest needing the extension of time/detainer.
Assist new arrests with required court paperwork.
Assist deputies and other arresting officers with sick, violent, or under the influence individuals.
Booking process of juvenile arrests per DOC guidelines of sight/sound separation.
Answer and transfer all calls coming into booking in a professional and courteous manner.
Review team bookings to ensure proper authority to hold.
Create and maintain a confidential office environment, utilizing tact, courtesy and good judgment.
Collect U/A’s, PBT and Drug Sweat patches for requesting agencies/departments.
Knowledge of data privacy, HIPPA and other information that can and cannot be released to outside agencies.
Operate inmate phone system.
Ordering of jail supplies and canteen items.
Monitor incoming and outgoing inmate mail for contraband.
Operate language line to assist with non-English speaking inmates.
Supervise inmates with mandatory 30-minute cell/pod well-being checks, formal counts and 15-minute well-being checks for special management inmates.
Talk to inmates who are struggling emotionally.
Maintain post log including well-being checks, inmate movement, meal delivery, laundry exchange, volunteer and professional visits and any other activity in the facility.
Daily cell searches for contraband.
Daily cleaning of facility including kitchen area.
Supervise inmate cleaning of personal cells and dayrooms.
Supervise inmate workers during cleaning, laundry exchange and squad washes and record times worked on inmate paperwork for court credit toward fines.
Prepare reports of inmate violations and enforce inmate discipline when necessary.
Knowledge of and ability to use restraint chair when necessary for when medical or safety issues arise.
Proper and necessary use of force when needed.
Ensures the continued maintenance of safety equipment such as Tasers, handcuffs, leg irons, radios, Stun Cuff’s and restraint chair.
Medication delivery including set up and proper documentation on Medical Administration Record.
Respond to inmate medical problems emergencies and notify physician after direction from medical protocol.
Knowledge of medical protocols from the jail’s contracted medical provider and when to use.
Intake of medication from incoming inmate or pharmacy including documentation on inmate Medical Administration Record.
Understanding of when an inmate meets mental health criteria and needs to be referred to jail psychologist.
Working with those in mental health crisis, including states of psychosis and violence.
Work with those on suicide watch with enhanced watch protocols.
Care for sick inmates, sometimes being exposed to those with infectious disease.
Directly care for inmates in times of pandemic.
React to medical emergencies and act as first responders until further aid can be rendered.
Release and receive work release inmates.
Intake and documentation of all money transactions for inmates.
Transports of inmates to court, including area boarders and Bureau of Prisons.
Transports from other facilities on warrants, WRITS or medical appointments, including medical emergencies.
Daily laundry exchange, daily washing and drying of laundry and set up of inmates clothing.
Receive & inventory food and jail supplies shipments.
Process inmate canteen orders.
Be able to appropriately answer electronic requests from inmates.
Proper communication with other counties, probation, attorneys, court, Human Services, Public Health, Police Departments.
Ability to understand Release Orders, Sentencing Orders and warrants.
Attend seminars, training, conferences relating to specific job duties, as required by Statue, Department of Corrects Standards, and MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) or at the direction of the Sheriff or Jail Administrator.
Ability to work a rotating schedule which includes days, afternoons, nights, weekends, holidays, some shifts with minimal notice and extended shifts due to weather or other emergencies.
Ability to prioritize tasks by matter of importance and remain calm in all situations.
Write detailed reports that can be used for victim safety, prosecution or internal jail discipline.
Must possess the ability to provide effective testimony in a court of law.
Act as a Training Officer to all newly hired Corrections Officers.
Attend trainings and understand the concept of ACE’s (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and work within that philosophy. Be able to use this training in talking to inmates.
