Participates in the planning and implementation of the health care provided within the Linn County Jail. Performs professional nursing work in compliance with standards set by the Oregon Board of Nursing.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of modern policies, procedures, and techniques for the care and treatment of prisoners.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and act professionally and effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of nursing principles methods and procedures associated with preventive measures in the maintenance of health in a jail.
  • Knowledge of the uses and effects of medicines and narcotics.
  • Ability to carry out written and verbal orders; exercise judgment within the scope of nursing principles.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with corrections staff, jail physicians and other agencies.
  • Ability to work in a corrections setting.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current, unencunbered, Oregon License to practice nursing.
  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Be 21 years of age or older.
  • Be of good moral fitness, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
  • Be free of any conviction for any felony; any misdemeanor involving violent behavior; or unlawful use, possession, delivery, or manufacture of a controlled substance, narcotic or dangerous drug.
  • Pass a written and/or oral interview as prescribed by the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Must pass a comprehensive psychological examination.
  • Possess and maintain a current, unencumbered license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Oregon.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR card including instruction of the operation of Automatic External Defibrillators.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English.
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation, psychological exam, drug screen, and integrity interview that establishes strong moral character.
  • Any conduct that could compromise the integrity of the employee, other employees, the Sheriff's Office or the County will be closely evaluated.
  • The individual shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of the individual or others in the workplace.
  • Must be able to meet and adhere to agency policy on Personal Appearance Standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Corrections nursing preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Review intake screening, perform physical assessments, evaluate those inmates who have specified medical problems.
  • Observe inmates behavior and physical condition, gather information on the inmates medical history and symptoms. Keep records of medical history.
  • Do liaison and coordination of health care with health care providers, hospital emergency rooms, private physicians and mental health staff.
  • Provide nursing care to inmates with drug and alcohol addictions, assist in emergency cases and trauma. Call in prescriptions to pharmacies, administer medication to inmates in accordance with orders of physicians.
  • Hold sick call, collect specimens for further assessment or diagnosis such as communicable disease cultures, blood, etc.
  • Promote individual and group well being through education activities including counseling, teaching and formal programs.
  • Nurse will exercise supervision, control and custody of inmates during the performance of their job duties.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Health Services Administrator or Jail Physician.
  • Develops and maintains effective, harmonious, and reasonable work relationships with others.
  • Maintains regular and predictable work attendance.
