About The Position

Incumbents attend, participate, and successfully complete the POST-certified Corrections Recruit Training Academy prior to being commissioned as a Corrections Officer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. This role requires maintaining physical fitness, obeying laws, and successfully completing academy training. Officers will wear a uniform, purchase their own equipment and a vest upon graduation, and must maintain qualifications on firearms and other weapons. Participation in random drug screening and maintaining a valid Nevada driver license are also required. Upon academy graduation, officers must be prepared to work any hours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends, and be subject to call-back or overtime requirements for effective operations of a 24/7 facility. Successful completion of the Corrections Recruit Academy, including firearms qualification, is mandatory. Officers will wear a body camera and vest, and other safety equipment. Requirements

  • Possession of a High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid Nevada driver license at the time of hire.
  • Must be 20 years and 6 months of age by the date of the first exam.
  • Must be a Citizen of the United States by the date of the first exam.
  • Must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm pursuant to any law, including NRS 202.360 or 18 U.S. Code § 921-922.
  • Must meet all minimum standards for appointment to perform duties of a peace officer under NAC 289.110.
  • Maintain physical fitness to meet all required physical standards for Corrections Recruit throughout the duration of the academy.
  • Successfully complete Corrections Recruit academy training.
  • Purchase their own equipment required for this position.
  • Purchase a vest upon graduation for future use as a weapons carrier.
  • Meet and maintain qualifications on firearms and other weapons.
  • Participate in the Department's random drug screening process.
  • Maintain a valid Nevada driver license.
  • Upon academy graduation, work any hours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends, as assigned and be subject to call-back or overtime requirements, if necessary, for effective operations of a 24/7 facility.
  • Qualify under Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) to work in a detention facility.
  • Comply with NRS 617.454, NRS 617.455, and NAC 441A.370, including undergoing, within 14 days upon transfer to a corrections facility, an annual tuberculosis testing/screening, and every 12 months thereafter.
  • Successfully complete the CO Recruit Academy, including firearms qualification and maintaining such qualification throughout corrections career.
  • Wear a body camera and vest, and other safety equipment.
  • Work any hours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends.
  • Study the learning materials on off-duty time.
  • Comply with the Department's rules and regulations.
  • Obtain/maintain a Nevada driver license, and register/maintain registration of personal vehicle with the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety (DMV).
  • Undergo a background investigation, which will include a polygraph, drug test, medical exam, standard hearing test and psychological testing.
  • Maintain physical fitness necessary to carry out job duties.
  • Participate in the LVMPD Mental Wellness Program.
  • Accept the requirements of the specific area of assignment.
  • All physical and mental conditions sufficient to meet all standards required for successful completion of the entire Corrections Recruit academy training, including but not limited to shooting a department-approved firearm; deploying other Department-approved weapons; maintaining Department-approved firearms qualification; and engaging in defensive tactics.
  • Vision sufficient to read the computer screen, as well as fine print in documents.
  • Hearing sufficient to hear, discriminate, localize, and respond accordingly to a variety of speech and environmental sounds in a variety of situations, including face-to-face communications, telephone conversations, or radio communications, in accordance with Department standards.
  • Dexterity and mobility sufficient to perform the following: operate standard jail and office equipment; operate motorized vehicles; climb stairs; sprint from one location to another during code response and run for an extended period of time.
  • Agility sufficient to twist, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach forward, jump, and reach overhead.
  • Strength sufficient to subdue and restrain persons and drag, lift, or carry persons or objects.
  • Endurance sufficient to perform the following: sit at personal computer terminals or in a vehicle for extend periods of time; stand and move around while working indoors or outdoors; wear a mask or other protection equipment for extended periods of time.
  • Alertness sufficient to be aware of surroundings at all times.

  • Successfully complete the above selection process.
  • Successfully complete the background investigation.
  • Successfully complete the Post-background NV POST Physical Fitness Exam for all candidates waiting longer than six months to start an academy.
  • Successfully complete the Pre-Academy NV POST Physical Fitness Exam.
  • Successfully complete the Medical Exam.
  • Two NV POST Physical Fitness Exam fails will result in a 6-month disqualification before being eligible to apply again.

  • Successfully complete the Pre-Academy NV POST Physical Fitness Exam.
  • Successfully complete the Medical Exam.
  • Prepare for the rigorous demands of the Academy, both physically and mentally.
