About The Position

The Corrections Recreation Leader at Roederer Correctional Complex plans, organizes, and supervises recreational activities for inmates, accommodating their varied needs, interests, and abilities through innovative planned activities and daily recreational opportunities. The role requires a security-minded individual who can develop activities for differing skill levels and interests, communicate effectively with institutional staff and offenders, and adapt activities to the facility’s security needs.

The position is based at a correctional institution and works in a hazardous environment due to interaction with inmates. The role is full-time, 40 hours per week, and eligible for overtime pay. The salary is $38,854.56 annually.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from a college or university, or qualifying experience in planned recreation, physical education, or related activities substituted year for year.
• Qualifying current or prior military experience may substitute for the required college education on a year-for-year basis.
• Strong communication skills for communicating with institutional staff and offenders.
• Ability to creatively develop activities for varying skill levels and interests.
• Innovative thinking and flexibility to implement activities in accordance with institutional security needs.

Responsibilities

• Plan, direct, and coordinate recreational activities for correctional clients in a large correctional institution.
• Consult with institutional staff when planning programs for residents.
• Gather information about offenders’ skills, abilities, and interests to recommend, plan, and implement recreational activities.
• Supervise gymnasium sanitation, general maintenance of recreation equipment, and inventory of supplies.
• Attend institution meetings.
• Prepare reports.
• Maintain records and inventories of recreational equipment.
• Direct leagues, tournaments, and holiday events for all inmate populations.
