About The Position

The Corrections Officer Trainee receives training and guided experience in the custody, supervision, and support of inmates in a state correctional facility. The role includes direct interaction with inmates and structured learning in security and counseling practices. The trainee works at the State Correctional Institution at Chester and helps maintain facility safety and order while supporting the well-being of inmates and staff. The position is full-time, with a 40-hour work week and shifts determined by operational needs. Employees may be assigned to any shift and all areas of the institution, must work required overtime and weekends or holidays that fall during their normal work schedule, and must report under adverse weather conditions. The position does not offer telework.

Requirements

Be able to perform the essential job functions.
Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
Successfully complete a medical examination, psychological evaluation, and urinalysis screening for drugs.
Successfully complete basic training in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania.

Responsibilities

Interact with inmates and visitors in direct and indirect situations.
Monitor inmate movement and activities in cellblocks, housing units, work areas, dining spaces, and recreation areas to maintain security.
Make periodic and unannounced rounds, conduct head counts and security checks, and report unusual situations to a Corrections Officer.
Participate in formalized instruction in sociology, psychology, court procedures, self-defense, leadership, custodial responsibilities, and the facility’s organizational structure.
Offer advice and guidance to inmates as they adjust to and participate in correctional processes and follow agency rules and regulations.
Write and complete detailed reports.
Act quickly and safely during emergency situations.
Wear employer-provided uniforms.
