About The Position

The Department of Corrections (DOC), State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Somerset is seeking a Corrections Food Service Instructor. This role involves keeping the kitchen running smoothly and safely while teaching inmate workers valuable skills in food preparation, production, service, and baking. The position contributes to the DOC's mission of reducing criminal behavior through individualized treatment and education, leading to successful community reintegration.

Requirements

Two years of experience in food preparation, production, or service of a variety of complete meal menus in an institutional food service operation, food catering service, restaurant, or a similar large-scale food production operation, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA.
Ability to perform essential job functions.
Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

Teach inmates food preparation, production, service, and baking, including how to follow a recipe and ensure timely meal preparation and service.
Instruct inmates in safe and sanitary operation of tools and equipment, cleaning, maintenance, and storage practices.
Inspect work areas, equipment, and food to ensure safety and sanitation standards are followed.
Adjust recipes to ensure appropriate food quantities, recycle usable leftovers, and manage food and supply requests, receipts, and storage.
Plan and assign work to inmate workers, evaluate their performance, and maintain records.
Help ensure proper control over inmates by enforcing custody and security regulations.
