About The Position

The primary purpose of this job is to maintain order and supervise a crew (5+) of inmates performing general park maintenance, custodial, special events, or park misuse for the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: inmate transportation, ensure inmate count of the institution is maintained, maintain security of the inmate crew, ensure safety of the facilities and guests at the parks, coordinate inmates on outside work details, perform regular inspections of the facility and inmates, ensure parks and facilities are clean and sanitary, ensure any assigned tools and chemicals are properly controlled, provide leadership and supervision over inmates, react quickly and effectively to situations jeopardizing the health and safety of others and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with two years of BCOT certified experience working in a Correctional Facility.
  • Must have P.O.S.T. Certification in Corrections and be in good standing.
  • Must be certified in First Aid/CPR or have ability to attain within 6 months of employment.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a two-way radio, van, firearm, sling blades, bush ax and telephones.

  • May be required to physically restrain hostile persons of much greater size.
  • May be required to physically defend oneself from violent physical attack by persons with intent on inflicting serious bodily injury or death.
  • This position requires: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently.

  • Requires the ability to lift, push, bend and pull objects or materials using body parts as the position necessitates.
  • Requires skilled movements coordinating eyes, hands and fingers accurately and making precise movements with speed.
  • Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as two-way radio, van, firearm, sling blades, bush ax and telephones.
  • Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Position requires binocular vision with good depth perception and peripheral vision, motion detection, high acuity, and light adaptation, as well as the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency.
  • Must be able to communicate via telephone, or two-way radio.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field of study preferred.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the inmate team outside of a correctional institution providing for security and safety of the public in the parks during time of inmate assignment.
  • Provides for inmate security and safety.
  • Receives, manages, implements, and supervises the daily work assignments for inmates as issued by the Facility & Program Supervisor.
  • Transports inmates.
  • Responsible for engaging with other Leisure Services staff and equipping them with rules regarding interactions with inmates.
  • Maintains and safeguards tools and equipment assigned.
  • Organizes & inspects tools and equipment necessary for each task.
  • Supervises and assists in picking up litter along parks, park roads, trails; cleans and inspect restrooms within open parks; cleans up after large events; cleans up after park misuse such as graffiti; cleans up trees and limbs after storms or tree felling; work around animals in the zoo as needed for cleanups or storm recovery.
  • Observes inmate behavior at all times.
  • Watches for contraband.
  • Monitors telephone and radio.
  • Assists in shakedown and head count process.
  • Ensures all gates; doors, rooms, etc. are locked and secure as schedule dictates.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
