About The Position

The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to fill one permanent full-time Correctional Unit Supervisor (CUS) position at Coyote Ridge Corrections Center. COYOTE RIDGE CORRECTIONS CENTER (CRCC) is located on a 60-acre site about 40 miles north of the Tri-Cities. CRCC is comprised of two-complexes. The Medium Security Complex (MSC) is a 2,048 bed facility that houses Incarcerated Individuals (I/I) with Medium and MI3 Custody. MSC consists of 4 Hybrid units and 4 Medium units. The Minimum Security Unit (MSU) is a 480 bed facility that houses assisted living and MI2 Custody I/I. MSU consists of 2 units. This is a work/program orientated facility that offers many educational, vocational, and self-help programs and Class II and Class III Correctional Industries work programs. Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Five (5) years’ professional corrections; criminal justice experience
  • Three (3) years’ progressive supervisory responsibilities, including one (1) year supervising personnel in a criminal justice arena.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide positive leadership in times of stress, conflict, and unforeseen events.
  • Remain calm and rational while handling difficult situations to include, but not limited to, volatile, threatening, or other crisis/emergency situations.
  • Expertly intervene in response to threats.
  • Working knowledge of incarcerated individual management and supervision including behavior management, classification process, sanitation, security and safety.
  • Understanding of incarcerated individual programs including preparation of individuals for transition back into society.
  • Working knowledge of DOC policies, RCW’s, WAC’s, and Operational Memoranda.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to supervise and train Unit Sergeant(s), Classification Counselor(s), Unit Correctional Officer(s) and support staff.
  • Bachelor or Associates Degree in criminology or a closely allied field from an accredited college/university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or foreign equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, monitor and direct the operations of an I/I living unit to include security practices, I/I program assignments, sanitation of the units, and compliance with DOC custody policies and operational memoranda.
  • Direct the security and accountability of I/I assigned to the unit. This ensures the safety of staff, I/I, visitors, volunteers, and the general public.
  • Administer and facilitate the Facility Risk Management Team/ Multidisciplinary Facility Risk Management Team in their review and implementation of classification discussion and recommendations for I/I programming, custody levels, and transition planning.
  • Solicit input from all resources to include the I/I.
  • Ensure the living unit sanitation level is consistent with expectations that are mandated by local, State, County and Federal guidelines and local facility standards.

  • Ensure all maintenance standards associated with the operation of the living unit are requested and completed in a timely manner that minimizes the impact on staff work areas and I/I living conditions.
  • Ensure inspections/searches of I/Is, I/I property, and living unit, to include program and other areas of the unit, are completed in accordance with established Department policies and procedures.
  • Plan, direct, and supervise the work of living unit staff, which includes support staff, Counselors, Correctional Officers and Correctional Sergeants.
  • Establish and prioritize performance expectations for staff utilizing core correctional practices.
  • Conduct timely employee performance evaluations and ensure proper training is provided.
  • Recognize good performance and appropriately document in the employee records.
  • Assess staff individually for career development, personal/professional goals, and provide them with training and/or rotational experiences.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to staff and lead by example.
  • Monitor work performance; investigate and take appropriate corrective or recommend disciplinary action.
  • Ensure all persons supervised by this position read and comply with Department policies, Operational Memoranda and Post Orders/manuals.
  • Participate in the recruitment process and submit recommendations to hire temporary or permanent staff.
  • Plan, direct and monitor unit programs.
  • Coordinate scheduled activities to enable all I/Is the optimum availability for participation.
  • Ensure resource information is made available to I/Is regarding programs and transitional opportunities.
  • Create and support incentive programs and awards to promote unit morale and positive behavior.
  • Oversee, conduct, and/or participate in hearings, investigations, and meetings.
  • Oversee and/or conduct infraction hearings and classification hearings.
  • Ensure all I/I due process rights are afforded and applied in an objective and impartial manner.
  • Oversee and/or conduct investigations pertaining to allegations of staff misconduct, I/I grievances, tort claims, and administrative segregation placements.
  • Chair or serve as a member of committees within the facility.
  • Participate with other management team members to develop, review, and implement policy decisions, strategic plans, and mission statements.
