About The Position

This position works within the Property Section of the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, and performs a variety of activities including inventorying, issuing, and storing of inmate property, assisting the property officer with changing inmates into and out of jail clothing, delivering inmate legal mail and publications, and notarizing inmate documents. Correctional technicians also support the Fairfax Adult Detention Center citizen help desk and answer inquiries from the public. These positions also assist the confinement squads and other sections as needed. Note: This is a shiftwork position. Working holidays and weekends is required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or a GED issued by a state department of education.
  • Two years of work experience.
  • Must be eighteen years old or within ninety days of 18th birthday at time of application.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare written reports.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to oversee inmates working in the Laundry.
  • Ability to work in areas that are usually hot, humid and noisy.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in corrections or a law enforcement environment.
  • Notary Public certification.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Bilingual in English and another language.

Responsibilities

  • Inventorying, issuing, and storing of inmate property.
  • Assisting the property officer with changing inmates into and out of jail clothing.
  • Delivering inmate legal mail and publications.
  • Notarizing inmate documents.
  • Supporting the Fairfax Adult Detention Center citizen help desk and answering inquiries from the public.
  • Assisting the confinement squads and other sections as needed.
  • Participating in a cross-training program to become qualified to perform duties in each functional area.
  • Following prescribed procedures to safeguard property and facilities and to protect against inmate escapes.
  • Assisting Deputy Sheriffs during the booking process by inventorying inmate property on the appropriate form, ensuring that the inmate receives a copy.
  • Placing all confiscated inmate property in a bag marked with the inmate's full name and Adult Detention Center (ADC) number.
  • Taking possession of and inventorying all controlled items and storing them in a separate place.
  • Assisting in the processing of inmates during the transition from the booking desk to actual admittance into the general population of the ADC.
  • Ensuring that new inmates take showers and are issued the items listed in the Inmate Handbook.
  • Assigning each inmate a bin number for storage of his/her property.
  • Assisting in the receiving of property during inmate visiting hours, ensuring that all property received is authorized by the Inmate Handbook and issuing receipts for all property accepted.
  • Recording all property accepted on the Inmate Property Card, and searching items prior to giving them to the inmate.
  • Assisting in the process of having inmates change clothing prior to going to and after returning from Circuit Court and Federal Court.
  • Ensuring that inmates to be released at midnight have changed into street clothing prior to being transported to the booking desk.
  • Verifying identification of any individual designated to receive inmate property.
  • Ensuring that all inmate property is stored when an inmate is placed on Disciplinary Segregation.
  • Ensuring that new razors are marked and placed in the proper area for shaving.
  • Distributing inmate shaving materials to post deputies and, after use, retrieving and discarding used shaving materials.
  • Assisting in the investigation of missing inmate property.
  • Overseeing inmate workers in the laundry.
  • Assisting in removing extra clothing and bedding from the cellblocks.
  • Assisting in the investigation of inmate complaints regarding laundry issues.
  • Reporting all laundry equipment maintenance needs to the proper contractors.
  • Maintaining a sufficient stock of supplies within the laundry and ordering supplies when needed.
  • Maintaining sanitary conditions within the laundry.
  • Maintaining required reports and statistics regarding laundry operations.
  • Separating inmate mail from staff mail.
  • Using computer location files to sort and label inmate mail for accurate distribution.
  • Stamping "return to sender" on mail for inmates no longer in the ADC.
  • Opening and searching inmate mail, taking appropriate action should the mail contain contraband or money.
  • Collecting and writing receipts for money from inmates upon their initial booking into the Adult Detention Center.
  • Releasing funds to inmates upon their release from custody.
  • Processing money orders left for inmates by visitors.
  • Processing money orders received by mail.
  • Processing inmate requests for release of funds to others (family, friends, bondsmen, etc.).
  • Charging inmate accounts for medical visits and commissary orders.
  • Processing inmate accounts for "hold funds" when needed.
  • Processing requests for authorized charges against inmate accounts.
  • Distributing blank commissary order forms to inmates and collecting completed forms.
  • Conducting monthly inventory counts of commissary goods.
  • Bagging commissary orders.
  • Delivering commissary orders to inmates and verifying these orders with the inmates.
  • Receiving shipments and restocking inventory.
  • Assisting in the placing of orders with suppliers.
