About The Position

The Montana Department of Corrections (DOC) is creating a safer Montana through Accountability, Rehabilitation and Empowerment. The Public Safety Division operates Montana’s prisons safely and securely and provides supervision and support for offenders in the community through its Probation and Parole Bureau. The work performed in this division is integral to the department’s mission to create a safer Montana through accountability, rehabilitation, and empowerment. This position is responsible for the overall safety and security of Montana Department of Corrections Transportation department. The Sergeant helps ensure the transportation department is operated for the safety of the public, as well as the incarceration, treatment and rehabilitation of the inmate population through supervising transportation staff and performing administrative duties.

Requirements

  • High School diploma and Basic POST Certification is required.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • A knowledge of the functions, procedures, organization, and governing laws and regulations of the corrections system and the prison, modern security techniques, record keeping procedures.
  • Skills in the use of modern security equipment, de-escalating volatile situations, and interacting with inmates effectively
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America;
  • Be at least 18 years of age;
  • Be fingerprinted for a criminal history search;
  • Not have been convicted of a crime for which s/he could have been imprisoned in a federal or state penitentiary;
  • Be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background screen;
  • Be a high school graduate or issued a GED or its equivalent; AND,
  • Possess or be eligible for a valid Montana driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years correctional officer experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise offenders, on and off property
  • Conducts thorough inspections and searches of inmates, buildings, and grounds
  • Performs security observation and inspection
  • Prepares documentation regarding institutional matters, such as incident reports, disciplinary documentation, counts and logs
  • Operates security equipment
  • Recognizes critical behavior and provides intervention for offenders
  • Restrains and controls offenders
  • Responds to emergencies
  • Enforces and follows rules and regulations
  • Ensures offenders’ basic needs are met
  • Supervise and direct work of at least 2 FTE Correctional Officers within assigned area.
  • Maintain order, discipline, and security within assigned areas in accordance with relevant rules, regulations, policies, and laws.
