About The Position

This position is assigned to Maury Correctional Institution located in Hookerton, NC. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer III's in a close custody institution with restrictive and controlled housing. The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
Pass a criminal background check
Produce a negative drug screening result
Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

Assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post.
Oversees officer activities and performance, ensuring the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
Arranges work schedules to ensure shift coverage.
Implements operational procedures and ensures rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
Supervises more staff than recognized in the lower-level Correctional Sergeant I or II.
Ensures that staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are followed.
Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates.
Gives direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies.
May refer offenders to restrictive housing for temporary assignment.
May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignments.
Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders.
Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
Investigates and takes action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
Prepares and reviews a variety of reports.
Completes annual performance evaluations and assists in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
Conducts staff briefing sessions.
Performs other related duties as required.
