About The Position

The Correctional Sergeant III position is located at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor, North Carolina, which houses approximately 1504 medium or close custody male offenders. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer III's in close custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Position assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained.

Requirements

  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

  • Arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Ensure that staff is fully trained, and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed.
  • Maintain facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates.
  • Give direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies.
  • May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s).
  • Respond to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders.
  • Conduct and/or supervise searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigate and take action, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Prepare and review a variety of reports.
  • Complete annual performance evaluations and assist in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
  • Conduct staff briefing sessions.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
