About The Position

This position is located at Craven Correctional Institution in Vanceboro, NC, Craven County. The prison is a Medium Custody Adult Male Felon Diagnostic Processing Center which houses 850 offenders. Employees in this class are first-line supervisors to Correctional Officer II’s in the medium custody facility, increasing the custody and security coverage.

Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
Pass a criminal background check
Produce a negative drug screening result
Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
Possess a valid driver’s license

Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate custody staff.
Thorough knowledge of disciplinary procedures and techniques appropriate for persons under criminal confinement.
Thorough knowledge of procedures, rules, and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates; and of correctional methods, techniques, practices, and procedures.

Responsibilities

Assigning lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post after inspecting each staff and determining if they are physically and mentally capable.
Oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained.
Arrange work schedules to ensure adequate shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
Complete, review and maintain time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations and other administrative forms.
Account for persons and assets to ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready.
