About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff, as well as probation/parole officers. The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina, providing safety, security, and rehabilitative services. Brown Creek Correctional Institution is a minimum custody facility located in Polkton, North Carolina, housing up to 916 male offenders.

Requirements

  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer
  • Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing officers' activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained.
  • Arranging work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures, and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Ensuring staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed.
  • Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of offenders.
  • Giving direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies.
  • Leading staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s).
  • Responding to emergencies, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders.
  • Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigating and acting, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Preparing and reviewing a variety of reports.
  • Completing annual performance evaluations and assisting in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
  • Conducting staff briefing sessions.
  • Performing other related duties as required.
