About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! This position's work is performed according to standard departmental procedures and supplemental instructions are received through the established chain of command. Additionally, this position is subject to a rotation to various duty assignments and performs other duties relative to the defined level of work described.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policy and Procedures and/or Facility Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising Correctional Officers, assisting with planning work schedules, assigning posts and the responsibilities for the Correctional Officers' activities relating to the custody and welfare of offenders.
  • Assisting and instructing Correctional Officers in the performance of their duties and complete performance evaluations.
  • Disseminating and interpreting to Correctional Officers and offender rules and regulations formulated by the Department of Adult Correction.
  • Making frequent tours of inspection to ascertain that Correctional Officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained and that assignments are being carried out.
  • Supervising offender counts and maintenance of all records so that offenders may be accounted for at all times.
  • Supervising periodic search of offender quarters for contraband.
  • Conducting investigations and developing prisons operational, emergency plans and post orders.
