About The Position

This position is located at Maury Correctional Institution. Must have effective verbal & written communication with staff, offenders, and the general public. Be capable of defending oneself against attack by violent persons. Monitor off site programs, which may require operation of a motor vehicle in a safe/ secure manner at any time of day and in varying weather/ road conditions. Work under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive. Conduct continuous visual/ audio surveillance of assigned work area. Accurately operate various office machines, prepare written reports/ forms which accurately reflect information reviewed from various sources. Demonstrate/ instruct inmates in the proper safe use of tools/equipment/supplies. Review, analyze & evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation and personal observation. Perform crisis intervention/ routine counseling including suicide prevention. Effectively train, observe, evaluate, and supervise subordinate staff in duties/ responsibilities. Account for supplies, equipment, and develop/implement/manage correctional programs.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures of the Prisons section.
  • Working knowledge of correctional programs and evidence-based practices.
  • Working knowledge of services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.
  • Working knowledge of the techniques of supportive counseling, interviewing, job placement, and employment possibilities.
  • Working knowledge of basic psychology, sociology, and psychological testing.
  • Skill in supervision.
  • Ability to gather and evaluate information concerning an individual's past experience, training, attitude, social environment, and mental capabilities.
  • Ability to develop, implement, coordinate, and supervise programs within framework of policies and procedures of Prisons
  • Ability to develop clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in corrections or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
