About The Position

The Correctional Officer is responsible for carrying out the directives of the Sheriff by organizing, directing, and maintaining an orderly and secure jail. This role ensures compliance by inmates with established rules and regulations and coordinates the operations of running a safe and secure jail facility. The incumbent may encounter not public data in the course of these duties and must adhere to strict access limitations and data storage provisions according to the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school plus or an anticipated graduation date that is within 6-months of the posting date.
  • At least one year of related experience.
  • Must have tact, courtesy, good character, and good judgment.
  • Must be able to work effectively without supervision.
  • A working knowledge of codes, processes, and operating requirements of the communication system and multiple computer environments.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, emergency service providers, other county and city staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures jail security.
  • Directs inmate activities, managing safety of public and inmates.
  • Mediates disturbances in the jail with inmates.
  • Counsels inmates.
  • Serves meals and coordinates activities.
  • Maintains records, writes reports, and files jail records.
  • Records incident bookings and medication deliveries.
  • Reviews and corrects records.
  • Maintains and completes individual criminal files.
  • Enters necessary data on prisoners into the computer according to the Department of Corrections Detention Information System, along with updated modifications and/or deletions, as requested by the Jail Administrator.
  • Executes procedures to ensure the safety of the public and the inmates within the jail.
  • Identifies medical emergencies, both physical and psychological, and handles them accordingly.
  • May be required to administer medication to inmates and administer drug testing.
  • At times, will be responsible for ordering supplies, groceries, and food preparation for inmates.
  • Directs maintenance of jail facility including general maintenance, repairing lights, cleaning, and laundry.
  • Performs other work-related duties as required.
  • If a new work assignment requires access to not public data, the incumbent is permitted to access not public data for the work assignment purposes only. Any access to not public data must be strictly limited to the data necessary to complete the work assignment and after the assignment is completed, the employee’s work assignment no longer requires access.
