About The Position

Correctional Officers are responsible for the custody, security, and well-being of the inmate population. Working under the supervision of a higher classified employee, a Correctional Officer manages, regulates, and supervises all inmate behavior by proactively interacting with the inmates and addressing matters before they become issues. Correctional Officers serve as the authority in the housing units and maintain order by providing direction and coaching to inmates. Correctional Officers also encourage inmate participation in jail programming and educational services. These services assist with re-entry into our community and contribute to reducing recidivism in our jail.

Requirements

  • Must have passed the Michigan Sheriff’s Association – EMPCO written exam for Corrections Officers and submit documentation of their score at the time of application submission.
  • Must have taken and passed the MSCTC-LCOPAT physical fitness test within the last year and submit documentation at the time of application submission.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must be free of any felony convictions.
  • High school graduation, or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to physically and verbally control disruptive inmates.
  • Ability to deal effectively with complex human behavior problems.
  • Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Ability to work effectively with the public and other criminal justice employees.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written orders/instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms.
  • Ability and willingness to enforce laws, rules, and regulations with firmness and tact.
  • Must successfully complete the Corrections Academy Certification as a Corrections Officer when requested by this department.
  • Ability to communicate effective orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of maintenance equipment and procedures.
  • Knowledge of organization or department operations, services, and policies
  • Computer skills are necessary to effectively utilize word processing, spreadsheet and accounting software systems and the ability to be trained on a specific software program.
  • Acceptable working knowledge of emergency first aid and CPR as prescribed by the American Red Cross.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and record required information from the inmate at the time of admission to the facility.
  • Search inmates and property for weapons and contraband.
  • Book and fingerprint prisoners, and prepare records of clothing, money, and other items on the prisoner at the time of detention.
  • Safeguard the inmate’s personal belongings and return them upon release.
  • Screen inmates for unusual medical of psychological conditions and report the same to supervisors and medical personnel.
  • Physically and verbally control disruptive inmates.
  • Escort individuals or groups or inmates out of cells for rehabilitation, visiting, exercise, sick call, court appearances, attorney visits, transfers to other facilities, etc.
  • Maintain inmate count including movement of inmates.
  • Enforce inmate rules by making written reports and making violations known to a supervisor.
  • Enforce jail policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Investigate violations of the inmate’s rules and regulations. Interview witnesses, victims, and others in order to prepare the required reports.
  • Inspect cells and premises for security and sanitation.
  • Distribute food trays, laundry, mail commissary, and bedding supplies.
  • Control inmates by patrolling corridors and other areas in and around the jail.
  • Check with the court for proper commitment papers and appearances.
  • Taking out bonds and being responsible for lawfully releasing inmates.
  • Transport inmates to court, medical appointment, and other appointments.
  • Conduct medication passes.
  • Conduct searches for new arrests and document illegal contraband.
  • Manage the control center to operate and control all electronic doors.
  • Provide emergency first aid and CPR and assist medical staff as needed.
  • Maintain a log of inmates with withdrawal and suicidal tendencies.
  • Perform related work as required.
