Correctional Officer
About The Position
The Kentucky Department of Corrections is seeking motivated individuals to work as Correctional Officers in a correctional institution. Officers work as part of a team to maintain the safety and control of offenders and provide security for inmates, staff, and the general public. The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, and eligible for overtime pay. The advertised annual salary is $39,127.68, with applicable locality, shift, weekend, and holiday premiums. The work environment is hazardous because the role is performed in a state correctional facility with convicted felons or in a juvenile detention facility. Officers may also encounter hazards associated with operating a motor vehicle while providing transportation services. Applicants must comply with applicable federal and state laws for carrying, using, and possessing firearms and ammunition. Employees in this position are prohibited from using medical cannabis due to other applicable laws.
Requirements
- High school graduate.
- No experience, training, or skills are required.
- Must be at least 20 years of age.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Must meet applicable federal and state laws governing the carrying, use, and possession of firearms and ammunition.
- Must maintain any required licenses, certifications, or other credentials for the duration of employment.

Responsibilities
- Maintain institutional control and safety by enforcing rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation areas, and work areas.
- Attend to inmates’ medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs.
- Inspect and patrol grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks.
- Complete required reports and daily logs.
- Conduct inmate counts, security rounds, and searches.
