About The Position

This position is at a Conservation Camp in Pioche, which is a minimum-security facility. The Correctional Officer Trainee will maintain and supervise inmates in a state Correctional facility in a controlled and humane environment. Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this occupation. The selection process includes a POST physical fitness test, extensive background investigation, drug test, medical physical examination, psychological examination, and a Correctional Officer Structured Interview.

Requirements

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of work experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
POST physical fitness test: vertical jump of 15 inches, Agility run in 20.4 seconds, 20 push-ups (not timed), a 300 meter run in one minute fourteen seconds, and a 1.5 mile run/walk in 17 minutes 37 seconds.
Extensive background investigation.
Drug test.
Medical Physical examination.
Psychological examination.
Correctional Officer Structured Interview.
Ability to read, understand, and follow instructions.
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
Ability to participate in activities such as foot patrol, standing for long periods of time, offender escape searches, etc.
Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

Conduct regular and unscheduled head counts of offenders during active hours in housing units, dormitories, work details, or training activities and telephone control center to ensure accurate physical counts according to established procedures.
Control, direct, and monitor the activity and movement of offenders within a specified area to ensure the security and safety of offenders, staff, and the public.
Coordinate, direct, and instruct offender work crews and evaluate offender work to ensure proper completion.
Monitor and control offenders during transport to work assignments, classes, medical appointments, and court hearings using proper restraints and transport tactics.
Intervene in and control acts of negative behavior and violence to maintain security and safety by instructing offenders and using physical force as required.
Conduct visual surveillance of the security perimeter and monitor vehicle and foot traffic entering and leaving the facility.
Inspect persons and articles before admission to the institution by operating metal detectors, x-ray machines, and/or hand scanners.
Perform random and specific searches of offenders and visitors to prevent the introduction of contraband.
Search offender housing, buildings, and personal property for weapons and contraband.
Maintain proper use, control, and accountability of keys, materials, tools, and equipment.
Inspect keys and locks for damage and check security features of the facility for damage or possible breach.
Operate appropriate State vehicles to transport offenders and patrol fences.
Write reports pertaining to occurrences that require action by supervisors and incident or disciplinary reports.
Process institution and offender mail and packages.
Brief supervisors and relief staff regarding institutional occurrences and areas of concern.
Monitor assigned areas to maintain established sanitary, health, and safety standards.
Operate communication devices such as two-way radio and telephone.
Complete offender movement sheets to show current location of offenders.
Answer questions of offenders and visitors concerning rules, regulations, and procedures of the facility.
Receive structured classroom and on-the-job training.
