About The Position

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a Correctional Officer Lieutenant. This full-time, hourly position offers a range of $37.72 – $45.45. The Lieutenant will directly supervise, mentor, coach, and discipline staff. Responsibilities include ensuring proper processing of occupants, maintaining the safety, health, and well-being of occupants, and ensuring the accuracy of jail records. The role also requires compliance with Federal/State standards and MCSO and Milwaukee County policies and procedures. In the absence of a Captain, the Lieutenant will assume their roles and duties. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must be eligible to obtain LESB Jailer Certification upon hire.
  • Valid Driver’s License required at time of appointment and must be maintained during employment.
  • At least three (3) years of Corrections experience at CO1/Deputy Jailer rank or higher required.
  • At least one (1) year experience in a supervisory role in a Correctional setting.
  • Previous experience with Tasers, OC spray and communication radios required.
  • Current Milwaukee County employees will not be eligible for selection if currently serving a probationary period.
  • Must be eligible to obtain CPR certification upon hire.
  • Must be eligible to obtain Taser certification upon hire.
  • Knowledge of the laws and rules pertaining to the operation of Judicial System, Corrections, and Law Enforcement
  • Knowledge of the procedures used in supervising the custody of occupants
  • Knowledge of approved Use of Force, oleoresin capsicum, lethal and non-lethal weapons and emergency equipment
  • Knowledge of the principles of criminal justice and their application to occupant custody
  • Knowledge of how to maintain discipline among the officers, employees, occupants, and visitors and methods used in preventing unauthorized persons from entering and leaving secure areas
  • Ability to interpret the laws and rules
  • Ability to organize work and develop work methods
  • Ability to perform repetitive work without loss of equanimity, patience, or courtesy, to remain calm and decisive in emergency situations, and to retain emotional stability
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to use safely and properly use vehicles, tasers, OC spray, radios, computers, and general office equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to push and pull up to 100 lbs.
  • Ability to complete 24 hours of in-service annually.

  • Routine shift hours with the ability to work irregular and unpredictable or particularly long hours. (i.e., covering double shifts)

Responsibilities

  • Supervise/Mentor/Train/Discipline/Evaluate Staff: Monitor staff activities to ensure compliance of all policy and procedures. Mentor and train staff to achieve performance goals. Evaluate staff performance/attendance/communication skills. Follow up on corrective actions, provide positive feedback and develop staff skills.
  • Facility Inspections: Ensure all housing units are clean and well managed and that officers are providing a safe secure environment. Check for and report on completion of all maintenance and building issues.
  • Occupant Interaction: Assist staff with occupant and housing unit issues. Ensure occupant safety and rule adherence. Conduct discipline hearings when necessary. Respond to occupant grievances and inquiries.
  • Public Service: Respond to all inquiries from the public, law enforcement, court officials, legal representatives, and outside agencies.
  • Emergencies and Disturbances Resolution: Respond to and initiate command of emergencies and disturbances following MCSO policy.
  • Scheduling: Verify, review, and/or modify schedules to fit the needs of the agency.
  • Intake/Release of Occupants: Verify and approve paperwork for the acceptance and release of occupants.
  • Statistical Reporting: Approve staff reports, enter data, create daily briefs, statistical reports and graphs. Complete quarterly reports, research projects and educational assignments.
  • Training/Education and Staff Development: Utilize training provided via internet, seminars, periodicals, self-improvement courses etc. to grow professionally and develop leadership skills. Assist with recruiting and retaining new hires, coordinate events focused on employee recruitment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
