About The Position

The Correctional Officer II (CO II) is accountable for providing lead work and limited supervision responsibilities. This role involves coordinating activities to regulate inmates, civilians, property, security, custody, and control functions within various areas of the correctional facility, such as control centers, mail rooms, meal halls, visitation centers, and housing units. The position is crucial for maintaining the safety and security of the general public, staff, and inmates. This role may require working additional hours and/or shifts to ensure continuous safety and security.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to corrections, law enforcement patrol, or military experience.
  • Corrections related experience is defined as experience in which the employee provided a direct service to/with inmates such as correctional officer, teaching, social work, nursing, food service, general maintenance; or worked directly with inmates in the implementation of a program such as Correctional Industries.
  • Corrections, law enforcement, or military experience is not typically earned through clerical support and/or security positions.

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Drivers must maintain a valid, non-restricted Colorado driver’s license, obey traffic laws, and be able to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Have NO felony convictions.
  • Applicants must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of application.
  • Successfully pass all modules of the six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics.
  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics.
  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security.
  • Successfully completion of a background investigation is required.

Responsibilities

  • Providing lead work guidance and training to assigned positions.
  • Recommending assignments for correctional officers.
  • Providing input into performance plans.
  • Promoting and maintaining a safe and secure environment through conscientious observation, clear communication, and adherence to agency regulations.
  • Enforcing statutes, regulations, orders, directives, and procedures.
  • Managing inmate behavior and encouraging personal accountability through effective and professional communication.
  • Monitoring and controlling access to the facility and restricted areas.
  • Training and guiding assigned staff on the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment, and chemicals.
  • Enforcing security procedures by conducting work-site searches, inmate counts, controlling unauthorized contraband, strip searches, cell searches, pat searches, and transportation.
  • Responding to emergency situations such as fights, fires, and escapes according to CDOC policy and preparing and submitting required reports.
  • May be required to seize, hold, control, and/or otherwise subdue violent, assaulting, or physically threatening persons which requires body strength and agility of all four limbs.
