About The Position

This Correctional Officer I position works as a canine handler and is assigned to the Security Accountability Section in the Western Region. The position is responsible for the training, utilization, and well-being of assigned canines, including daily care, feeding, and ensuring appropriate medical attention. The handler is also responsible for maintaining cleanliness of canines and kennels, proper care and maintenance of an assigned vehicle and equipment, and participating in annual in-service and specialized training for handler/canine certification. The role may involve coordinating and working with special teams and their missions, and responding to emergencies such as searches for escaped offenders, potentially outside the Western Region.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise working with the overall operation of correctional facilities.
  • Proven experience using various policies, procedures, rules, and regulations associated with the control and management of offenders.
  • Expertise working with emergency preparedness and knowledge of special teams.
  • Demonstrated skills in the use and care of firearms.
  • Previous K9 handling experience is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to emergencies and searches for escaped offenders.
  • Responsible for the training and utilization of all canines.
  • Responsible for the well-being of assigned canines, including cleanliness and kennels.
  • Responsible for the daily care and feeding of canines, ensuring appropriate medical care.
  • Maintains a record of the canines’ medical history.
  • Responsible for the proper care and maintenance of an assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • Participates in annual in-service training and any specialized training required for handler/canine certification.
  • May be required to coordinate and work with special teams and their missions.
