About The Position

The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry (ADCRR) is seeking a driven leader to join our team as a Correctional Major at our Perryville Complex. The ideal candidate will have experience in leading and developing diverse groups of staff, progressive administrative and security experience in managing inmate populations and emergency situations, exhibit excellent communications skills with both staff and incarcerated individuals, and be responsible for ensuring the complex applies modern correctional practices.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of State and federal laws and regulations relating to Corrections, department policies and institutional directives, and personnel rules.
  • Knowledge of Physical layout of the institution, the organizational structure, security systems, and institutional managerial practices.
  • Knowledge of Inmate management methods.
  • Knowledge of Incident Command System (ICS) requirements and practices.
  • Knowledge of Reporting practices.
  • Skill in Written and verbal communications.
  • Skill in Administrative, managerial, leadership, and supervisory techniques.
  • Skill in Planning and projection of staff and inmate needs.
  • Skill in Time management.
  • Skill in Researching, analyzing, and problem-solving.
  • Ability to Adhere to all Departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to Create comprehensive yet concise reports.
  • Ability to Interact with staff, inmates, the public, and other law enforcement and community agencies.

  • Ability to Assume leadership in crisis situations.
  • Must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license.
  • Must complete all required training and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks.
  • Must maintain acceptable driving records.
  • Must complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of Correctional Officer Training Academy and associated supervisory training for positions of Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain.
  • At least one year of experience as a Correctional Captain.
  • Completion of National Emergency Response requirement.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice/Corrections, Public Administration, Business Administration, or Sociology/Social Science, or be actively enrolled in a degree program.

Responsibilities

  • Provides oversight and indirect supervision of Unit Captains to ensure compliance with policy and expected operational security best practices.
  • Provides oversight to ensure the efficient use of resources and the management of complex staffing.
  • Provides direct supervision to the Complex Operations Captains and subordinate supervisors.
  • Conducts tours, inspections, and audits the complex and units to assess security procedures and inmate populations.
  • Supervises areas of responsibility to ensure code compliance, policy compliance, training compliance, and all safety requirements are maintained.
  • Oversees operational integrity of all security equipment, including weapons, munitions, restraints, metal detectors, chemical agents, perimeter surveillance, and communications equipment.
  • Reviews reports and conducts security reviews of each position.
  • Evaluates staff for knowledge of their individual positions and responsibilities.
  • Communicates informally and formally in written or verbal formats to subordinates and superiors on a wide variety of correctional related topics.
  • Communicates with the incarcerated population.
  • Reviews, reads, and researches problems, trends, and areas of concern.
  • Researches, gathers, analyzes, and compiles reports.
  • Completes special projects.
  • Attends training and/or meetings as required.
  • Provides training on security related matters.
  • Performs other duties appropriate to the assignment.
  • Coordinates internally across the Department and externally with partner agencies to ensure Complex Emergency Preparedness standards are consistently met, maintained, and effectively regulated.
