About The Position

The Correctional Lieutenant position has a vital role in the Facility and Custody department. The position supports the daily operations by assisting to ensure safety to all employees and Incarcerated Individuals, supporting Correctional Officers in their daily job responsibilities, along with supporting the Captains and other positions within Custody and other supporting departments. Pendleton Correctional Facility is a maximum‑security facility located in Pendleton, Indiana, housing incarcerated adult males. The facility also operates an adjacent minimum‑security dormitory. While the campus has historic origins, it includes updated housing units and medical areas that support modern correctional operations. Incarcerated individuals can participate in educational programs, GED preparation, and literacy courses. Additional opportunities include substance abuse treatment, parenting courses, and vocational training in auto body repair and printing. Staff emphasize safety, accountability, and skill development.

Requirements

Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Must test negative on all drug screenings.
Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and practices utilized in a correctional environment.
Ability to work mandatory/voluntary overtime.
Ability to supervise and achieve desired results from offenders and staff.
Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to apply as needed.
Ability to communicate effectively, including giving clear directions.
Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.
Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
Ability to successfully complete all mandatory training including the DOC Supervisory Training Program, First Aid, and CPR courses.
A High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) and at least 3+ years of experience in corrections, law enforcement or military law enforcement and 1 year experience as a correctional supervisory or supervisory training in related field applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role.
Ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

Oversee daily inspections of the units.
Track all incidents, properly vet, and report all incidents to the Operations Center.
Lead assigned staff in maintaining the security and safety of offenders, buildings, and grounds.
Follow all policies and procedures related to facility’s operations and emergency preparedness.
Provide input to supervisors on staff assignments, performance, corrective actions, and specific security issues with potential resolutions.
Assist in identifying offender treatment needs and support programs for treatment and rehabilitation which may include encouraging offenders to accept professional assistance and treatment from staff as needed.
Direct staff regarding the maintenance and cleanliness of the facility.
Act as shift supervisor directing and coordinating daily operations utilizing a team of Correctional Sergeants and Officers.
Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees.
Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.
