About The Position

The Montana Department of Corrections (DOC) is dedicated to creating a safer Montana through Accountability, Rehabilitation, and Empowerment. The Public Safety Division, where this position is located, is responsible for operating Montana’s prisons safely and securely, and for providing supervision and support for offenders in the community through its Probation and Parole Bureau. The work performed in this division is integral to the department’s mission. The Correctional Lieutenant is a key role responsible for maintaining order, discipline, and security within the institution, specifically at the Montana Women's Prison in Billings, MT. This position involves responding to emergencies, providing first aid, supervising subordinates, and managing administrative tasks.

Requirements

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Capability to prepare administrative paperwork and supervise the preparation of records, forms, or reports
  • Ability to monitor behavior of subordinates to ensure alert, courteous, and professional behavior
  • Positively represent the Department of Corrections and the Montana Women's Prison in the community
  • Intermediate POST Certification within one year after assumption of assignment
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be fingerprinted for a criminal history search
  • Not been convicted of a crime for which could have led to being imprisoned in a federal or state penitentiary
  • Be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background screen
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Possess or be eligible for a valid Montana driver’s license
  • Not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or issued a court order of protection (Brady Act & Lautenberg Amendment)
  • Not have engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution; or been convicted of engaging in or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; or been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in such activity (Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA))

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining order, discipline and security within the institution in accordance with relevant rules, regulations, policies, and laws
  • Responding to emergencies, such as escapes and rescue functions
  • Providing first aid
  • Monitoring behavior of subordinates to ensure alert, courteous, and professional behavior toward inmates, parolees, fellow employees, visitors, and the public
  • Completing administrative paperwork or supervise the preparation or maintenance of records, forms, or reports
  • Supervising activities, such as searches, shakedowns, inspections or tours
  • Establishing and maintaining control of violent or uncooperative inmates
  • Setting up or modifying work schedules or assignment
  • Assuming command of the facility in the absence of a higher-level manger, in the event of a serious incident
