About The Position

This position is assigned to Bertie Correctional Institution located in Windsor, NC. Reporting to the Correctional Captain III, this position is responsible for the supervision of subordinate staff at a multi-level male correctional facility. The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming as assigned post.
  • Completing reviews and maintaining employee time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations and administrative forms.
  • Insuring that all assigned equipment is operational, providing daily inspection of offenders living areas, medical, kitchen areas and the facility to identify possible safety hazards and to ensuring the operation is running smoothly.
  • Identifying training needs and coordinating delivery of training to subordinate staff.
  • Conducting investigations, searching of staff, visitors and offenders for contraband and responding to emergency situations as needed.
  • Serving as Officer-In-Charge (OIC) of the facility when his/her rotation is working in the absence of the Correctional Captain as needed.
