About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency with over 14,000 employees responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons, probation/parole services, and various support divisions. The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina, categorized by custody levels. Pender Correctional Institution, located in Burgaw, North Carolina, is a medium custody facility housing up to 768 male offenders.

Requirements

  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Sergeant
  • Or Two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant II
  • Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Providing supervision for subordinate staff, conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments, and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
  • Completing, reviewing, and maintaining employee time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations and administrative forms.
  • Conducting investigations as assigned both for offender and employee disciplinaries.
  • Monitoring and maintaining assigned employee equipment, ensuring that all assigned equipment is operational.
  • Conducting inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained, NCDAC policy is being followed, and that assignments are carried out properly.
  • Identifying training needs and coordinating delivery of training to subordinate staff.
  • Conducting searches of staff, visitors, and offenders for contraband.
  • Responding to emergency situations as needed.
  • Serving as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the facility in the absence of the Correctional Captain.
