About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Reporting to the Associate Warden of Operations, this position is responsible for the supervision of subordinate staff. Position responsibilities include the following:

Requirements

  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented experience with report writing.
  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policies and Procedures/or Facility Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts shift line-up, makes shift assignments and inspects all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post
  • Complete reviews and maintain employee time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations and administrative forms
  • Ensure that all assigned equipment is operational, provide daily inspection of offenders’ living areas, medical, kitchen areas and the facility to identify possible safety hazards and to ensure the operation is running smoothly
  • Identify training needs and coordinate delivery of training to subordinate staff.
  • Conduct investigations, searches of staff, visitors and offenders for contraband and respond to emergency situations as needed
  • Will serve as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the facility when his/her rotation is working in the absence of the Associate Warden of Operations and custody.
