About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) is hiring Correctional Electricians to fill vacancies at MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield, Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown, and Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers, CT. This position is full-time, following a first shift schedule, 40 hours a week, scheduled Monday - Friday, and is entitled to excellent benefits including health and dental. Candidates selected for this position will be required to attend the 14-week Training Academy in Cheshire, CT. The Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) is a diverse agency with a wide variety of employees from Correction Officers, to Educators, to Managers and Skilled Professionals. The DOC protects public safety by ensuring offenders serve their sentences of imprisonments in facilities that are safe, human, and provide re-entry programming. The Engineering/Facilities Management Services unit is responsible for providing centralized direction and technical assistance throughout the agency, including management of the capital budget and plan; project design, approval and management; facility preventative maintenance; and repair.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of experience as an electrician.
  • One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the highly skilled level.
  • Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.
  • Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, tools and equipment involved in electrical repair and installation work.
  • Knowledge of principles and operations of electrical systems.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Considerable ability to analyze quickly and accurately extent and cause of electrical malfunctions and failures.
  • Ability to interpret and revise electrical wiring and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to plan, layout and schedule maintenance assignments and estimate costs.
  • Ability to operate and utilize computerized and automated control systems.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to instruct others in techniques and skills of electrical maintenance work.
  • Ability to perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations.
  • Supervisory ability.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from a vocational or technical school in the electrical trade may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.
  • Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of existing electrical infrastructure in commercial buildings.
  • Experience with the installation and repair of control wiring for motors, automation, fire-alarm, security CCTV and data networks.
  • Experience with inspection, testing, and repair of electrical appliances including kitchen and laundry equipment.
  • Experience with standby generators, transfer switch, and UPS systems.
  • Experience applying the National Electrical Code.
  • Experience with Building Management Systems and Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook and Excel.
  • Valid E-1 (Unlimited Electrical Contractor) or E-2(Unlimited Electrical Journeyperson) license.

  • Maintenance of facility and cell infrastructure wiring
  • Record of tool inventory/control
  • Snow and ice removal
  • Supervising assigned inmates
  • Repairs, maintains and installs electrical systems and equipment such as motors, transformers, generators, wiring, switches, fixtures, circuit breakers, emergency lighting, fire alarms, etc.
  • Determines electrical malfunctions using test instruments such as amp meter, voltmeter and Volt-Ohm-Milliammeter (VOM) tester and repairs defects by replacing burnt-out elements, fuses or wiring and cleaning or re-wiring components.
  • Provides instruction and training and maintains custody of and disciplines a group of inmates assigned electrical maintenance duties.
  • Instructs inmates in planning, layout and wiring of new installations and making equipment adjustments using hand tools.
  • Keeps records and completes necessary reports.
  • Evaluates performance of each inmate assigned to work area.
  • Maintains discipline and enforces security measures.
  • May perform supplemental duties related to other trade disciplines based on experience, knowledge, skills and agency needs.
  • May physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist security forces in emergencies.
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Performs related duties as required.
