The Correction Lieutenant supervises correction officers (CO’s) and Correction Sergeants/Counselors assigned to one or more posts/areas or special duty. They instruct and evaluate CO’s, assign staff to posts, and enforce post orders and assignments. The Lieutenant ensures CO’s and correction sergeants/counselors are alert, attentive, and properly placed by inspecting each post. They enforce the utilization of body-worn cameras with CO’s and ensure the proper utilization of body scanners on the incarcerated population. This role conducts surveillance security of the institution and property, prevents escapes, apprehends escapees, and prevents incidents that threaten the security and safety of the facility, incarcerated population, staff, or the general public. This may involve using physical force, unarmed self-defense, firearms, and/or other force to detain or secure incarcerated persons. The Lieutenant makes constant rounds to inspect cells, shops, recreation areas, and dining rooms for cleanliness, compliance with safety regulations, possible contraband, and general security. They monitor and direct custody operations during inmate movements and attend monthly unit meetings, assisting the Correction Specialist in supervising Correction Officers. The role assists in supervising and/or arranging for the supervision of meaningful activities, and helps develop and enforce memorandums of understanding between service departments and units. They respond to staff concerns and ensure the availability and utilization of personnel protective equipment (PPE) for Correction Officers. The Lieutenant responds to the needs of incarcerated persons, manages disputes, and seeks resolution involving the incarcerated population, reporting complaints of abuse by employees. They participate in a team approach to unit planning, operation, and problem-solving, and respond to emergencies and security alerts. This role gathers information and writes reports covering accidents, fires, and employee and inmate disciplinary actions. They complete employee and incarcerated worker performance evaluations and schedule work assignments, population bed movement, meals, educational, and recreational activities. The Lieutenant serves on rules infraction boards or other committees as required and ensures the safety and security of equipment and supplies.
