About The Position

This is an existing position for a Corporate Legal Counsel. The role involves providing expert legal advice on various project delivery modes, leading the negotiation of contracts, and managing legal and commercial risks. The counsel will also handle claims, regulatory compliance, and drive continuous improvement within the legal function. The position can be based in any of Dillon's offices in London, Chatham, Windsor, Kitchener, Guelph, and Hamilton. The company offers flexible work hours and hybrid work arrangements.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B).
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario (or eligible to register).
  • Minimum of 6+ years of experience practicing Law.
  • Demonstrated success in leading legal aspects of multidisciplinary project teams and driving growth.
  • Deep knowledge of consulting and construction industry practices, procurement methodologies, and risk profile norms.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to act as a pragmatic, solutions-focused business partner to senior management and technical staff.

Nice To Haves

  • A background providing in-house services for the professional consulting, engineering, or construction sectors would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice on different types of project delivery modes, including standard design-build and alternative delivery approaches such as Progressive Design-Build, P3, and Alliance frameworks.
  • Lead the legal review and negotiation of consulting and construction contracts, subcontracts, and other legal documents.
  • Act in an advisory capacity, making recommendations that have an important bearing on the conduct of the organization's business and risk management.
  • Provide legal/commercial advice to project management teams throughout the complete project life cycle, from bid through to execution and closeout.
  • Identify and manage legal and commercial risks in new business lines and develop proactive mitigation strategies.
  • Work with management to resolve pre-litigation disputes and developing settlement strategies for project-level claims, including lien claims and accounts receivable collections.
  • Supervise and manage external counsel and litigation budgets to maximize quality and cost-effectiveness.
  • Provide technical guidance on Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) matters, "Constructor" designations, and statutory compliance for multidisciplinary service lines.
  • Advise on the protection of intellectual property and IP licensing matters.
  • Take leadership on department projects and drive continuous improvement within the legal function.
  • Identify and implement ways to improve legal department efficiencies, particularly where legal overlaps with other corporate functions like HR, Finance, and IT.
