About The Position

Applied Materials is seeking a Corporate Counsel, EHS to join their world-class Corporate Legal team. This role involves advising on and supporting the company’s compliance with environmental, health, and safety (EHS) laws and regulations globally. The position requires working closely with business and cross-functional teams to understand the applicability of EHS laws, advising leadership on compliance strategies, and managing EHS legal risks. This role uniquely combines legal advisory and compliance functions, requiring the identification and resolution of complex problems impacting a global business. Candidates must possess compliance experience, sound legal judgment, an aptitude for novel issues and complex technologies, and the ability to learn and grow in a dynamic environment. The position may be based in Santa Clara, California, or Austin, Texas, with occasional travel required.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Currently admitted to practice law in at least one United States jurisdiction
  • 3+ years of EHS compliance experience at a top-tier law firm and/or in-house
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Exposure to complex EHS compliance matters
  • Passion for serving as a business partner
  • Desire to dive into the details

Nice To Haves

  • Previous in-house experience (preferably at a technology company with global operations)
  • Prior experience advising company on applicability of EHS laws and regulations
  • Broad experience with EHS regulatory landscape, in particular California, US, and EU, and/or a desire to learn in order to support new technologies and growth for the company.

Responsibilities

  • Advising on and supporting the company’s compliance with EHS laws and regulations based on subject matter expertise in the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Resource Conservation Recovery Act, Comprehensive Environmental Recovery, Compensation, and Liability Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, OSHA standards, locally equivalent regulations thereof, REACH, CE Marking directives and other EHS laws and regulations
  • Advising on EHS legal and policy initiatives, requirements, and compliance obligations, and managing outside counsel resources associated with the foregoing
  • Working collaboratively in cross-functional teams to manage EHS legal risks
  • Auditing legal aspects of environmental and safety compliance policies and procedures and updating or revising to the extent needed
  • Designing and delivering tailored training to the company on EHS compliance
  • Advising the company on responses to product safety incidents, including communications with customers and other stakeholders
  • Communicating with U.S. EPA and OSHA, state and local regulatory agencies, and other external regulators, on permit applications, inspections, enforcement actions, and other activities
  • Advising regarding environmental due diligence and negotiating environmental contract terms in commercial or real estate transactions
  • Serving as a member of due diligence teams on acquisitions and post-closing integrations to assess the state of, and ensure compliance with, EHS laws and regulations
  • Collaborating with the company’s in-house litigation team and outside counsel in connection with environmental or safety compliance enforcement actions or litigation, as needed
