About The Position

The Cyberspace Operations Research and Education (CORE) Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock is seeking Cybersecurity Research Assistant candidates to support ongoing research and educational initiatives in cybersecurity. The primary responsibility of an Cybersecurity Researcher is to provide professional-level support related to research and creative activities under the direct supervision of a faculty member, including data collection, cybersecurity initiatives, and other tasks as assigned. Students are expected to have an adequate background in foundational IT knowledge, hands-on technical skills, basic security principles or digital workflows. The position can be extended to future semesters. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Foundational knowledge of cybersecurity principles, basic computer systems, common cyber threat awareness, and security controls.
  • Follow instructions well and assiduously
  • Ability to use critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Ability to adapt to stay current as threats, technology, and defenses evolve.
  • Understand situational awareness of environment and system interdependencies.
  • Ability to analyze data to identify trends, anomalies, or potential threats.
  • Ability to approach security holistically, understanding how people, processes, and technology interact.
  • Accept constructive feedback and implement it effectively.

Nice To Haves

  • If a current student, overall GPA 3.0 or higher
  • Bachelor's Degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or a related field
  • At least 1 year of work experience in a computer science or cybersecurity field
  • Completion of a comprehensive cybersecurity course or equivalent experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team

Responsibilities

  • Participate in and contribute to cybersecurity research projects, including threat hunting and application development
  • Participate in Cybersecurity Clinic initiatives, projects, and other related tasks
  • Familiarity with resources pertaining to area of expertise
  • This position will also be responsible for other duties as assigned by supervising faculty, including but not limited to the preparation of research materials, providing editing assistance, and reviewing materials for errors or inconsistencies
  • During work hours an employee should be reachable by work channels (email, phone, text) and responsible for timely response
  • Assist with peer learning and collaborative student projects in cybersecurity practices and research techniques
  • Assist in the development and presentation of research findings at academic or industry events
  • Must notify supervising faculty when circumstances prevent the employee from carrying out job responsibilities
