About The Position

BWXT's Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers. This is a Summer 2027 internship opportunity where innovative thinking is fostered and barrier-free teamwork is embraced every day. As a Core Neutronics Intern, you will work with our engineers and designers to create and analyze nuclear reactor systems by developing analytical models and conducting performance assessments.

Requirements

  • Must be a currently enrolled student, pursuing a degree in nuclear engineering.
  • Must have a strong interest in nuclear engineering.
  • Must have taken introductory engineering classes, including thermodynamics, fluid flow, and nuclear engineering courses, including neutronics.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with nuclear analysis tools (MCNP, OPENMC, SIMULATE/CASMO or other) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with experienced engineers and designers to develop analytical models for nuclear reactor neutronics or thermal performance analysis and assess their operating characteristics using state-of-the-art analysis software.
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team to make design tradeoffs and decisions relating to neutronics or thermal performance of a terrestrial or space based nuclear reactor system.
